Looking for Local Pediatrician Who Will Support a Modified Vaccination Schedule

Are there any pediatricians in the IRMO, LEXINGTON, COLUMBIA area that offer a modified vaccination schedule? We are interested in getting necessary vaccinations for our child but on a schedule which spreads out the aluminum containing vaccines.

Before I get jumped on by the hardcore anti-vaccine crowd - I am a working mother and my child will be going to a licensed daycare facility. I will only be breast feeding for 3 months. Therefore, I want necessary vaccinations to be given on a modified schedule, not skipped altogether.

Thanks for any guidance regarding a pediatrician we can call to get started on our vaccination plan.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks a bunch @MommaW and Nicole G. Really appreciate the help. Maybe I don't need to be so strategic about finding the right Doctor. I was thinking that I would need a Doc from Dr. Sears list (I left a VM for the one in Newberry, SC today) to refer me to someone closer but it sounds like maybe I should just jump in an start calling local Pediatricians. It's nice to hear that the tide is turning and Dr.'s are starting to be more open minded about favoring a more cautious approach. Sorry to the other lady, I didn't mean to offend with my statement! Just trying to get an answer quickly. Have a great day all!

I would agree that you should just start calling Dr.s to see what they will agree to.

Otherwise - any chance you have a chiropractor? I received a "referral list" from my Chiro who recommended I see a massage therapist, but also on that list were area doctors and pediatricians who were okay with modified vaccine schedules.

Good luck!

Why would you automatically assume that anti-vax people would jump your case? Maybe the pro-vax people will jump your case for not getting the appropriate vaccines ON TIME so you don't put your baby and others at risk....food for thought...

I didn't look for a doctor that would do it. I just told them that was what I wanted...and they had no issue with it. I really think that they will be happy that you are choosing to vaccinate....and will go along with your spread out schedule.

My doctors totally understood the concern...I didn't get any guff or even a raised eyebrow. I think it is pretty norm for parents to come in asking this.

Good luck and best wishes!!

You might be surprised how many doctors will work with you... at least that's what I found. All of the pediatricians I met (three or four while I was pregnant) were willing to help me create a modified schedule. So perhaps look for a pediatrician that you like and that your friends recommend and then talk to him/her about vaccines?

The first poster provided Dr. Sears's vaccine schedule; it might help to show this to the pediatrician you're considering so that you have something concrete, not just a theoretical question that the doctor might not understand.

Your bigger problem may be the daycare facility. Will they take an under-vaccinated baby if you're behind on the official schedule?

Whether you're pro vaccine or anti vaccine, she just asked for a doctor who shares her views, not your opinion on her views. If you don't have a doctor recommendation or anything helpful to say, just zip it.

I haven't heard of any objecting. If anything, its more money in their pocket, as you may be paying extra co-pays for brief vaccination visits.

Good luck to you and yours,

As long as your on board w/ vaccinating, any decent pedi will work with you and so will day cares so long as your working on it...when we brought our little man home from overseas as an infant, yes, we had to do some revaccinating (yuck) and our pedi was quite cooperative.

Good luck

at every well visit my dr says the vaccines that are due at that age.. and I tell him which ones I want.

I skipped chicken pox vaccine and hepatitis A vaccine.. all other shots are done.. I did not start vaccinatiosn until 4 months.. but if your child will be in a day care he should start vaccines before he starts day care.

As long as you are open to vaccinating, more pediatricians will work with you. Like fanged said, it's more money for them and secretly, a lot of them support spreading out vaccines. They are only given so early as a public health issue because that is when they can catch the most kids. Only a few will save a child's life and are actual threats.

I would think several doctors would respect your wishes (assuming they are reasonable). I let my doctor know I wanted to wait until my child weighed more for several shots. I think size is something that should be considered. The daycare needed prove that the immunizations were up to date.
