Looking for Local Charity in Bolivar, Springfield MO Area

I am looking for a place to donate some warm afghans and stocking caps, quilts, scarves... you get the idea. I like the warm up america network- where you get crocheted squares in the mail and sew them together and make afghans then give them to people who need them. My problem is I can't seem to find out where or how to do this. I'd like to give to abused women and children or homeless. Maybe disaster victims.
I am also looking for a place I can get a Christmas Wish list for people. Where they post what they want and you can get it for them. Does anyone have any advice for me or suggestions on how I might find something like this? Would also like to help chemo. patients.
Thanks for everything, C.

What can I do next?

As far as the Christmas wish lists go, several stores in Springfield put Christmas trees up in the front entrances around the end of Thanksgiving with wish lists on them. WalMarts also do those. Also, the Springfield News-Leader will soon start running a section up until Christmas in which they have different "cases". They profile different families, give a little background, and what each person would like forChristmas. It is usually clothing, blankets, or other household items. They keep the families anonymous, but do give the ages and genders and pretty specified ideas of what they need that they would like to get. I know of others, but am not sure where to go through. One other woman had mentioned the Boys and Girls club of Springfield, and I have heardgreat things about the work they do as well as far as that goes. Good for you for being so thoughtful of others!

Have you tried Victory Mission in Springfield? I know they help out a lot of less fortunate people.

I'm sure there are many charities in the Springfield, Missouri area that would be glad to accept or refer you in the right direction. Some resources you may seek direction from are:

American Red Cross (for disaster victims)

Salvation Army (for disaster victims)

United Way

Springfield Victory Mission

American Cancer Association (could use these ideas to raffle off as fundraisers)

American Lung Association (could use these ideas to raffle off as fundraisers)

Family Violence Center

Boys and Girls Club of America

You could even check with local psychologist and psychiatrist offices that might have some clients in need of these types of items.

The Springfield Chamber of Commerce:
Division of Family Services:
Should also be able to direct you on any charities in the Springfield, MO/Greene County area that would be glad to accept your donated creative talents, so that you may direct them to those in need.

This list should give you a good start at finding those that may be in need.

Good luck!

Crosslines is another place.

C.,

If you look on the United Way website at (http://www.uwozarks.com/agency_directory.asp) you can find a list of local charities. Many of these would welcome your gifts including the Family Violence Center, the Kitchen, and others. As for Christmas Wish lists, I know the Boys & Girls Clubs (www.bgclubspringfield.org) usually have an Angel Tree at Ruby Tuesdays closer to the holidays, but you could contact one of the units if you are interested in working more closely to help children.
