Taking a road trip in June from Florida to North Carolina and we are going to make a stop in Charleston. Been looking online and there are many options to stay in Charleston, and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation? I am just looking for a place that is clean and either near the river or close to downtown so we can drive around and check out the sights.
Thanks!

We are planning to stay just one night, but could do two. I don't necessarily want to pay the downtown prices, thats why I don't mind staying a little further out and driving around. I will look into the Mt. Pleasant option, Thanks!

What can I do next?

My husband collects Hilton points so when we've been there we stayed at a Hampton Inn near the downtown market area and an Embassy Suites within walking distance of many sights/attractions. However, I think of both of them as more appropriate locations for walking in the city, not driving. How long are you stopping in Charleston? When my brother and SIL visited they stayed in a hotel in nearby Mt. Pleasant and then took a ferry/water taxi to the city.

I would totally recommend the Vendue Inn. Great location and very old and cool. Super staff too!

I live in Mt. Pleasant, so definitely look at the hotels here. There's a great (but pricey) one right on the Cooper River by the Yorktown. It's called the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. It's right by the bridge (Ravenel Bridge) that connects Mt. Pleasant to downtown Charleston.

There are a lot of other less expensive options too in Mt. P. Shop around and have a great time here! We have a lot of fun things going on in June!

Go o to hotels.com. Great website for info. I do not book thru it, I deal with hotel directly. So many great places in downtown. This ste tells you how far things are n anything else you need to know. I deal with hotels dire fly be ause of the cancellation policies some website it costs to cancel. Last summer had to cancel two different reservations due to two deaths.

If you are staying just one night and leaving the next day -- staying in Mt. Pleasant and taking a water taxi or ferry could be fun for the water ride, but will eat some of your very limited time. Being near the river jacks up the price for any hotel. I'd check out Hampton Inn in the historic area or there's a Best Western high-rise that is outside the historic area but an easy drive in, and we had no issues parking in garages (and we were there for a whole week). Street parking isn't going to happen, though.

One thing to know -- June in Charleston is going to be hot and VERY humid; it's swampy. We honeymooned there in June and loved it but it's very sweaty. Terrific town; we spent spring break there last year (2012) and had a wonderful time with our then-11-year-old. Try to stay longer if you can!
