We live in Sebastopol with our 11 year old 5th grade daughter, and our 17 1/2 year old bipolar son, (suicidal at 4,significant learning disorders, always in SED, functioning pretty well now..a sense of all the resources we have utilized). Our daughter has always had focusing, following directions, and planning difficulties, not paying attention problems in class..or a group..and learning in groups. (when I taught her riding privately her focus was pretty good, semi-privates some loss, groups, a pull on the entire group.) She was in Waldorf until last fall, we transferred because her teacher was mean. She is very bright, naturally talented, and excels at many things. Some difficulties have been exacerbated by the transfer (math level, access to the big culture) but all in all it has been a positive move. She is also skilled at making a 20 minute assignment into a 3 hour one. We have given her a long leash, but we get more done sitting at her side, tv helps as a reward, but the problems are still there, almost daily. We have used many techniques. We have had some outside (limited) help come to our house, and many other things. She wants to try a learning center, she suggested sylvan. We want to respond to her request. We want to find the best place possible, w/in a 1/2 drive, local(Seb), SR, Rohnert Park, Occidental, etc. But we want a great person in a good program--if we have to drive further for excellence we will. thanks in advance for your help. I'm grateful for a community like this, and even more grateful, to have school be an issue, as opposed to the pain of our son. Kudos to all you incredible parents of special needs children. You know what a luxury it is to be able to have a comparatively simple request. thanks to all you mom's who do an incredible job. We have, and can and will continue to change the world. In advance, thank you for your time.
gratefully,
S. Jan

HI S.,
I don't have a suggestion for you ,but am curious to talk to you about the wALDORF SYSTEM.wE HAVE TWO KIDS WHO HAVE BEEN IN IT ON AND OFF.Oops didn't mean to do caps lock.Just moved mY son from Village Charter where the lessons in respect and kindness were incredible ,back into Waldorf and I find the culture of the class to be very mean.Yet for the first time he is applying himself and showing some will when it comes to assignments. So can't quite figure out what is working and what I can do to have him remember his learning in kindness in the midst of it all.P..

Dear S.,

Don't know of a center close to you, but do know a fabulous middle school teacher who does tutoring on the side. She has been teaching a Severely Handicapped class in Sebastopol from before my 18 year old was in her class. She tutored him one summer, and he learned a lot from her. She's a brilliant teacher, who makes learning fun.

I empathize with you with your son. Raising a child with special needs can be very hard work! I am a single mom who has been raising my son alone for 17 years. (My partner bailed when I took in my son who had, and has, a life threatening illness--along with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She couldn't hang. Couldn't even imagine taking on a partner until my son is more or less on his own.) My son didn't have any friends until we joined Special Olympics. There we found a great support network, and he has made some very important friends.

My email address is ____@____.com, if you want the teacher's name--or if you just want to continue this conversation.

Good luck to you,
Deb

Hi S.,
I know this isn't what you expected but it may help. I am a retired elementary and early childhood teacher. I have worked with many special needs kids. In some cases I went to their homes because they could not cope with being in school. Toward the end of my teacher career I learned that CranioSacral Therapy was very helpful with many of the children I worked with. To that end I studied with the Upledger Institute and currently am trained to worked with children using CranioSacral Therapy. If you would like to know more check out www.upledger.com. You can also view my profile on that site.
Good Luck,
D. Bohr,B.S., NCTMB

This isn't the answer to your request but I'm wondering what kind of school she's in now. Have you considered a charter school?
