Looking for Good Breast Pump Recommendations

I'm expecting my 3rd child in a few months. I have a 2 yr. old and a 4 yr. old. I was able to nurse the first 2 and occasionally used a single pump. With having 3, I want the flexibility of being able to pump more. I'm planning to buy a used pump to save money, but with so many brands out there I was wondering which ones people loved the most and why i.e. ease of use, ease of cleaning, quiet, pumps quickly. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I have a really good one for sale. It's the Medela Pump-In-Style double pump. It's gentle, quiet, and fast. It has a shoulder bag so it transports easily-even from room-to-room! It comes with a little storage bag and several bottles as well. It's important to use a good one to protect the very delicate breast tissue! Contact me if you're interested: ____@____.com. J.

I actually have a Medela pump (in the backpack) that I used. If you were interested, I would sell it to you. Just email me at ____@____.com and we can discuss. The only thing is you would have to buy the attachments as it is not safe to use someone elses. The pump is electric, where you can plug in or if you were on the road you could use the battery pack. Well, if you are interested send me an email.

Medella! I had the pump in style shoulder bag and recently upgraded, thanks to having it covered by insurance, to the Metro Bag. I loved the Metro Bag, as the pump is small and easily removes from the other parts for ease of use/storage/travel. Medella will also replace the tubing for free if you call them on the 1800 number.

I switched from a hospital-grade Medela to the Purely Yours and actually found that the Purely Yours worked better. (I had to exclusively pump for 3 months, and was able to build my supply the whole time with this pump!) Also, it has a "closed system" so the milk can never back up into the motor as it can with the Medela.

Check around for prices; I'm pretty sure that the Lanisoh pump you can purchase at Wal-Mart or Amazon (for $102! : http://www.amazon.com/Lansinoh-Double-Electric-Breast-1-C...) is the same thing, just a different color. I would stay away from used Medelas because the other mom's milk could have gone into the pump previously, which could be unsafe for your little one.

Blessings!

I would highly recommend Ameda Purely Yours. You can get it off of Diapers.com. I got mine for $125, you get it in just a couple days too...they usually offer some sort of discount if you have never ordered from their site. I used mine all the time. I thought it was just as great as the ultra fancy Medela pump that they let you use in the hospital.

You also have the advantage of using it with batteries if you don't have access to an outlet. My daughter stopped nursing at 4 months (she started teething super early), so I would pump and then bottle feed....I did that until she was 9 months. Never had any problems with it.

Best wishes to you!

First, let me say there ARE health risks with using a used Medela Pump in Style, Avent, or Ameda Purely Yours. This is not just what the manufacturers say, but the FDA and some other independent sources as well (http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/pumps.shtml). There is no way to sterilize between users. That being said, all are good pumps, and you can get the Medela or Ameda brand new for under $200. Check out www.bosombuddies.com. They have a price guarantee, too, so you can be sure to get the best price. Or, you can check out the Hygeia. You may spend an extra $30-$100, but it is a multi-user pump, so you can plan on reselling when you are done.

You can rent breast pump from the hospital or participating provider and your insurance may cover it if you have a prescription from your doctor. It's much better that the ones sold at retail.

I also had a Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump that worked very well, that I carried with me for travel and when I wasn't at home. It was easy to clean too.

Do NOT buy used.....please.
Medela Pump in Style - I used with 2 kids, great double electric pump, easy to use, comes in a discreet laptop looking bag.... I bought my pump online at Hackley Medical equipment (google it) and it was a lot cheaper than buying it at a retailer like BabiesRus, I think I spent $150. Good luck. congrats on continuing BFing!

Medela Pump-In Style was great; I used it 3x working full time and traveling too. The 'bottles and attachments' at the time I used it were about $40 new. I would have no issues buying a used pump, and just replacing the attachments with new. The link below wasn't active [correction - be sure that 'close parenthesis' is not included when you copy and paste]. I'm not an expert, but I seriously doubt there could be health risks from a used pump (w/ new attachments). Milk does not flow through the pump itself. The article Robin included did note risks, but didn't say how meaningful those are. It seems remote to me, but you could always buy from someone you know, or someone who donated her milk to a milk bank (yeah, some of us have LOTS of milk, and it is tested for concerns).

I liked my Medela Pump In Style, I had the original, not the advanced kind. It was reliable and efficient. I went back to work at 6 months and pumped until 14 months.
Medela markets their pumps as single user, but in retrospect, or if I had to pump again I would buy a used PIS and replace the tubing. Everything else can really be sterilized very easily (yeah, i would not even bother replacing the shields... they sterilize just fine).
Good luck!

I am an Avent die hard. I pumped exclusively for weeks with one of mine, and used it for daily pumping in addition to breastfeeding my others and it has never slowed down! I tried the PIS and one that was rented from a hospital and they paled in comparison. I was able to get twice the milk in half the time with the Avent. I'm now expecting baby #8, and with the medical problems we have discovered with him via u/s I know that breastfeeding is not very likely so I will be doing a lot of pumping again. I am so glad I have the Avent and won't have to get one of the hospital pumps!

I love my Medela Pump in Style. I used it for my daughter (now 3 1/2) and now my son (8 months). It's easy to clean and works consistently. I looked online and saved a lot of money over Babies R Us. They don't post their prices usually, but if you spend some time calling around to get prices, you can save a bundle.

Good luck!

Ameda Purely Yours! It runs for $299 but I purchased it from AwayBaby.com for only $250. It works great. I work FT and pump at work, both boobs in about 15 minutes. Its easy to use and comes with a neat bag to put all your things away. I love it!

I think most people fall back on Medela--you could buy the electric unit used and just buy your own tubing and other parts to save money but maintain sanitation. I loved my manual Avent Isis, which I used for a year with both of my boys (working/pumping full time). I loved that it was easy to clean, minimal parts, easy to assemble, and very efficient. I also had a really good milk supply, so I don't know how well it would work for someone who might be struggling with that. If buying used, definitely get information on how much use it has had--my pump gave out right before my second child was 1, so if it has already gotten full-time use for a few kids, it might not have much life left.

Ameda Purely Yours. Hands-down. I pumped a LOT and ended up donating extra milk. I would feed my son and then have to pump because I was still engorged. I had two kids, and my pump lasted almost the whole time I was breastfeeding them both. I have used other pumps, and this is the onlyone that was comfortable to me. Plus, it is really inexpensive, easy to transport, and does not weigh a lot at all. It takes up WAY less space than the Pump In Style.

I will just throw out there, that as a mother of three, I had a harder time pumping with my third. Breastfeeding and taking care of my other kids took up so much time (wonderful time, of course) that pumping came last.

I LOVE my Avent isis iq duo pump. It is easy to keep clean. Way easy. The way it is designed no milk can ever get into the tubing!! (which can be a problem for the medela. It is easy to use and I love that it "memorizes" your pattern, and you can change that patten. THere are not just two options.the bag it comes in is easy to carry. it can be pricey but i shopped around and found a great deal.
