Hello moms,
My 4 year old son (almost 5) will be having umbilical hernia surgery in a few weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations for books that we could read to prep him for having surgery? Any other tips would also be appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Where is your son having his surgery? My son had an appendectomy at Children's Hospital in St. Paul. There was a resource person who was wonderful. She met with me and talked about the procedure and how to talk to my son about it. She also brought a bag of stuff the doctors would be using so that he could see them and she played with him, explaining what the things were and letting him use them on her. And she talked about how he may feel when he woke up and when he recovered. She was great.

You should call the hospital where he's having his surgery to see if they have a similar person. They could recommend some things you could do that are age appropriate.

Here is the website to information from Children's Hospital:

Its hard seeing your child in the hospital, even with "routine" surgery. Find out what the hospital's procedures are for the parents. Children's Hospital let me stay with my son in the operating room until they administered the anesthesia. They let him stay in his jammies until he was asleep and put the back on before he woke up. It made it easier.

Good Luck and you'll be in my thoughts in the coming weeks for a successful and smooth surgery and recovery.

We have a book by Usborne called Going to the Hospital where a littlee boy goes in for ear tubes. It is available separately or as part of a story collection called Going Places.

I didn't have a book, but when my daughter had surgery at age 3, the hospital (UW Childrens) had a movie that she watched. I think it was Slim Goodbody. It was really good and very easy for her to understand.

Good Luck!

Call the hospital and ask for their Child Life department. These are people who help make kids feel more comfortable about the hospital, etc. They can probably give you son a tour in advance if you want, etc.

Looks like you got some good resources. Here's a good website from the hospital I went to when my daughter had an operation. It's about what to expect and things to bring:

As for books, this is actually a children's book but it's good for helping any kid mentally prepare for what will happen, Franklin Goes to the Hospital:
