Looking for Boy Bedding

My husband and I have spent way too many hours doing searches for bedding for our son. He's 4 and we want something that will last a long time (quality and interest). We are anti-commercial / anti-character, so even though he loves Disney Cars (the original...we didn't let him see Cars 2 because of things like missiles...yes, we're against that too : - ) we don't want to do his room in that. He's obsessed with all things cars and racing and especially loves muscle cars (think late 60's Ford Mustangs). He loves car shows more than Christmas! I've typed in everything I can think of, such as "muscle car bedding", "hot rod comforter", "race car sheets", etc. etc. I've looked on ebay and etsy and what feels like 100 other sites. It's either Disney Cars or looks really babyish. We looked at fabric but it seems cost prohibitive by the time you pay a seamstress to do it all (comforter, sheets, curtains, pillows, etc.)

Help! Ideas?

What can I do next?

I would do a general color scheme for bedding/paint - and use accents of cars on the walls & decor. There are some cute ideas on Pinterest for car themed rooms and different ideas of how to display them. Being so young - you might get a couple years out of it...but you don't know when they will change their mind again. My son was all about sports last year at 4, now he's all about having a specific team - so we have general wall color and accents galore (garbage can, night light, wall hangings, decals, etc).

If it were me, I would do a more neutral color for the bedding and play up the muscle car/hot rod thing with the accessories. Find some cool pillows, model cars, pictures/posters for the walls, maybe a lamp or a rug. That way if he ever grows tired of the car thing it would be easier to switch up the decor.

I don't think you should invest in car themed bedding and curtains. Next year he could be totally into dinosaurs or airplanes or something else. Kids rarely fixate on one thing for long.
I always kept my son's bedding neutral (blues/grays/cream, look at Land's End or LL Bean) and put up some pictures of things he was currently into. I also disliked character stuff but I often let my kids pick out sheets than were fun for them because you can't see them when the bed's made anyway. You can probably get a cute car themed lamp, night light, bookends, stuff like that to "decorate" the room.

We're doing my son's room in a train theme. (He is 3.) We are sticking to solid colors for the bedding. I am making the curtains in a patterned fabric. We are bringing in trains through pillows, accessories and artwork. You could easily find car themed curtains, if you want to have that punch of car stuff in fabric.

I'd just pick the bedding, etc in a certain color and then buy decorations in whatever theme. That's what we did in our dd's room. Her walls are blue, her bedding is rainbow polka dots, her curtains are pink, and her wall art is dragons and fairy tale creatures. Much easier than trying to find bedding in the theme, too.

My son is 5 and his room is done in St. Louis Cardinals. I had the same issue with finding a comforter set I liked. I ended up buying a black comforter that reversed to red, then I just bought Cardinal throw pillows. He has lamps and a toy chest that are Cardinal's. We also bought baseball drawer pulls for his dressers and his ceiling fan is baseball bats. His headboard is a huge baseball glove. I guess my point is, buy a plain comforter and use the "theme" as a decoration. :) You can even buy cool wall decals with cars online. Maybe just buy the material you found to make throw pillows and curtain ties.

I totally respect your desire to go non-commercial. I would try The Company Store. I've never ordered anything from them but get their catalogs occasionally and have admired the designs and colors. They have quite a few choices for boys in some appropriate and non commercial themes. Check it out and good luck.

My son is 4 and I feel the same. We did a feature wall in his room of tree wallpaper in greens and and he has a coverlet from restoration hardware but target also have great ones in a stitched navy, it will last forever. He has 2 cotton blankets one grey one green (in case one is in the wash) and 3 sets of graphic printed sheets, 1 with crocodiles in green and navy, 1 with dinosaurs (both from pottery barn kids) and one with vintage atlas theme from restoration hardware. All these themes will last into teens. I don't mind the expense ($100 for 2 sets of pottery barn organic, $120 for restoration sheets and $150 for reversible jersey quilt, $40 for each blanket) knowing they will last all I might have to buy is another couple of accent sheet sets. So go for a neutral quilt and blankets in grey, navy, green or red and accent sheets. Also marshalls have great quilts and recently saw a grey one with navy border for $40. For car themed accent sheets try restoration hardware They also have a car pillow http://www.rhbabyandchild.com/rooms/?cm_sp=global_top_nav... and pottery barn kids and potterybarnteens.com they have car sheets on sale http://www.potterybarnkids.com/m/products/urban-sheeting-.... Good luck.

I love the ideas you've got already about doing solids with accessory accents. Or you could do a compromise, with solid sheets and a duvet cover/pillow shams that you can easily change when he moves on to some other interest.

That said, here are some links I found:

I also saw this site where you can customize your bedding:

Here's some really cute accessories:

In general I find that Pottery Barn Kids and Company Kids have some of the cutest, non-character/movie stuff. You might also look at Lands' End. Happy shopping!

I agree with the Pottery Barn kids recommendation. Although they are pricy the quality is worth it. What we did is we bought a Multi colored comforter with solid curtains. I used some of his favorite books as art for his room. These can easily be updated as he grows and I bought him character sheets. These are inexpensive, hidden and makes him feel great. And when his taste change also easily changeable. In fact one set of Grand Parents gave him a set for Christmas( preferable over toys for me) and he was thrilled to bits. This way you get a room that grows with him and he gets a little bit of what he loves in the room. Currently we are on Phineas and Ferb sheets. Good luck!

I picked a color scheme for my son. He likes orange and blue, so I added a little lime green and went with those colors. I was able to find everything reasonably priced at Target (he has a bunk bed, so cost was a big factor since I had to do it times two!). I did want his own little touches in there. So he has a bulletin board and he hangs up pictures of characters and art work he's done, that sort of thing. And there are two frames where we change out the pictures. When we did the room when he was four, we had Bob the Builder pictures. Then we changed them out for Ghostbusters and now it's Star Wars. We also did a few character pillows...a little touch without the crazy cost. I also found navy and green shelves that matched the color scheme. We change the decor there sometimes to match what he's into. I have too many friends who are repainting murals and buying new bedding. My son loves his room and so do I. The little touches make it "his". And it's decorated in a way that he can grow with for quite a while.

I have three boys (7, 4, and 2). All of their bedding comes from Pottery Barn Kids. I am also anti-character and wanted something high quality! We have their sailboat line and train line. The quilts wash so nice. Love, love, love!

We got our son's bedding at Bed Bath and Beyond, and I can't remember the brand it was... it seems like it was Company Kids or something like that. We've had it for 3 years and it's now about time to find something new... but it's held up pretty well. I looked on BBB and they have a set called Kas Kids Raceway that I thought was cute. And they have a "Finish Line Quilt Set"

You might consider just finding the sheets and comforter you like or just the comforter and then picking out the colors for the rest of the room (curtains pillows etc...)

There is another site called FamilyBedding.com that had a muscle car set that was temporally out of stock.

Good luck!

Etsy or Ebay could be good choices for you. Try "boys bedding" search for Etsy (lots of custom made stuff there), and I would suggest a "Pottery Barn Kids bedding" search on Ebay. There were vintage car and truck sheets from PBK on there only a month ago.
