Hi All, Can you recommend some brands that I should look for? I actually need a dresser and a book case and wonder if I can get a combo item. Also are there any stores that I should specifically look into for good quality affordable baby furniture?

I recommend Babyland Furniture in San Jose. We bought Baby's Dream crib and dresser and find them to be solid and sturdy. The staff is also very knowledgable. Also look into Pottery Barn Kids and Land of Nod. These are higher end (and more $) but I think it's worth it to get solid, good quality furniture.
Not necessarily a recommendation...but what to stay away from. Generally, I've liked Ikea furniture...but we bought dressers for our bedroom...and they are NOT sturdy. The bottom of the drawers are not very thick...so if you put any amount of weight...or even fill the drawer with closes to the top it starts to sag at the bottom. So I would caution against getting Ikea dressers. We have Target dressers in my kids' rooms that used to be my dressers before they were born, and those have lasted way longer than the Ikea ones have.
I've heard a lot of good things about Hoot Judkins furniture though.
there is a place called "hoot judkins" that i really like that carries solid wood furniture. there probably isn't a dresser with built in bookshelf exactly, but i've seen hutches that you can attach to the top of dressers, which would have shelves. i don't know if i would bother with "baby furniture". i'd just get "regular" furniture, because it will last longer and transition with the kid as she ages.

Another place you could check out is IKEA. Believe it or not, they do carry very sturdy furniture (especially for kids). The only thing is that you would have to assemble it yourself (but you can always hire a handyman to do the job).
