Hoover Windtunnel supreme. My sister got me one because I kept wearing them out with a dog and thick carpet. I love the light that is red when the carpet is still dirty and green when it's clean. It's power is so strong, it's almost self-propelling. Using it for the first times, I thought "What a liberating feeling."

I'm an odd duck who has two vacuums, a Rainbow and a Dyson. The Rainbow we've had for about 15 years. It was quite pricey, but still works fantastic. It's only draw back is that it's a complicated to pull out and use for quick clean ups. That's why we bought the Dyson. The Dyson doesn't work well, but--as good as it is--the Rainbow is even better. Seriously, the Rainbow kicks A**.

So if you want deep cleaning, I'd go with the Rainbow. If you want ease of use, go with the Dyson. The Dyson probably won't disappoint you. There are plenty of people who love theirs.

S., join Freecycle for your area and post an ad or look for others giving away vacuums. If you can deal with a used one, go to Goodwill or Salvation Army, etc. J.

I love my bissil. I have had it for about six years now, and we do have dogs. I have three boys 11,13,and 15. It is one with a canister so you don't have to keep buying bags all the time. It's pretty light weight. We have recently torn out all our carpet and now I'm looking at the Versus Bare Floor Vac. It is alos from Bissil.

I suggest a dyson. It's well worth the money. Pets or no pets. It the only time when you want an appliance to suck! :D

I have had an Oreck XL for MANY years and it still picks up like a champ (and I did have an inside Dog and Cat for a while). It is light weight, easy to clean (bag changes), and easy to handle. My only "complaint" is that you have to buy the bags from a dealer, not available at the grocery or dicount store . . . but they always have specials and such.

I have also heard good things about the Dyson, but know it is much heavier and have not personally used it.

The only thing I can tell you for sure (experience, experience, experience) . . . you get what you pay for with a vacuumn and "gimicks" don't mean a thing.

Hi S.,
There are so many out there- it depends on how heavy your cleaning is and really how much you want to spend- If you are looking to replace your cleaner every year or so just get most any of them, but if you are looking for long term money savings and excellent performance there are two that are my favorites. The kirby of course is my most favorite- it does everything- it has more attachmenbts then you can imagine- it has the carpet shampoo attachment -but it is a little heavy ........I have had 3 kirbys in my lifetime (71 now) and I finally went with a lighter one- the Oreck- it is great- only 8 lbs and does a great job cleaning....both are a little pricy but well worth the money in the long term
Good luck

I agree with Heather. Dyson is more expensive but it is worth it. I was at a clients home and she had one with the Allergy approved collection and it was amazing, on all of the different floors, carpets, wood and Italian tile.

I have 5 yr old twin girls, a 15 month old & 3 teenagers. I know that you said you do not have pets, but we have a German Shepherd (who sheds ALOT) & a Peekapoo. I bought a hoover nano lite from Walmart & love it!! It picks up extremely well. I was actually surprised at the volume of debris it picks up, considering it was only around $40-$50. I have a Thermax & a Bissell, but the Nano does just as well as they do & is small & light weight. Adjustable handle that shortens if your children are old enough to do chores, and it has hand held extentions with it.
Good luck in finding the one that is right for your household.
As for the dyson, I spent a month with a friend out of state while searching for a home to buy. She has a dyson & I used it to vacuum her house several times, I was not impressed with it at all! I prefer my Nano over a Dyson anyday :)

I am partial to canister vacuums, so if you like them too I recommend the Kenmore Magic Blue from Sears. I got mine about six months ago for around $70. Portable, lightweight, sucks like the dickens on both tile and carpet. Big plus: the stick is adjustable in length - so I make it short and my KIDS like using it too!
I have 3 kids and a dog, no carpet (I used it to clean my MIL's carpet and it passed!), and for the money I think it's a great buy. If you have stairs it wouldn't be convenient to haul up & down all the time, but it would probably be lighter to haul than the large uprights previously mentioned.

I have an Electrolux from the 1970's LOL. I paid $400 for it at the time and it is still running well, but since it is practically an antique I have been thinking of replacing it. Lately, it seems to overheat. I will probably keep it and have the engine cleaned and use it in the garage. Thanks for the information.

regarding the dyson, I found it a very heavy vacuum to use. I had broken my wrist and dislocated my elbow 6 years ago and I can't push/pull heavy objects and I found it too heavy to use.
Just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in b/c as much as dyson is loved by consumers it is too costly to purchase and not use.

I absolutely love my Dyson. They have a few different models. I have the one for pets, but a neighbor of ours has the regular and we both love them! I love that there are no bags and it is very easy to empty. We've had ours for 4 years now and I would never get another vacuum again!!

I recommend the Kenmore cannister vacuum. My daughter has a DYson and when I visit her I refuse to use it because it is so hard to manuver. She also has an old Kirby and I get it out and use it. I have had 2 kirbys and they are very good vacuum cleaners, but pricey. That do last forever.

I highly recommend the Dyson. It is on the high end, but well worth the investment. I have had mine since soon after they first started advertising in U.S.. After the first time we used it you could smell the difference. I had to empty the canister after each room that first time. It is amazing how dirty rugs and carpets are and you don't even know it.

Hope that helps.

Dyson is definitely the way to go. You can sometimes find them on sale at bed bath and beyond AND they will also let you use the 20% off coupon. I have the slim model and I love it!!
