Looking for a New Pediatrician - Minneapolis,MN

I have been taking my son to Southdale Pediatrics since we moved to South Minneapolis. I took him there because the clinic was so highly rated here on Mamasource. However we have not been so pleased with the doctors we have seen there. There must be a better doctor there (or elsewhere) who will be a better fit for us. The first doctor we saw there wouldn't listen to anything I had to say, because he had some preconceived notions about my son, and everything I said that contradicted his theory was ignored. He asked me the same questions over and over, I think trying to get the response he wanted. I think that's not only bad doctoring, its weird.

What I want is a doctor who doesn't freak out about every little thing, but at the same time, if something IS wrong, he or she doesn't treat me like some crazy mom who thinks everything is a crisis. My son's first pediatrician acted like I was crazy for thinking he had food allergies (he does, to almost everything, and he has tons of test results that prove it, so no I wasn't crazy). It is time for his 4-year well-child visit, and also I am due with his little brother in about 2 weeks, and I'd like to find a doctor I can take both of them to.

So who do you see that you like? I wouldn't mind still going to Southdale since we've already been going there (and there HAS to be a good doctor there, otherwise why would they be so highly rated?), but if there's another place, that would be ok too. We're actually thinking about buying a house soon, and we don't know where we'll be going, so any place in either city or close suburbs will work, since who knows, we might wind up moving there anyway! Thanks!

What can I do next?

My husband and I have been taking my 2 year-old daughter and 2 week old son to see Dr. Stephen Lutz in the EP office. He is very good with kids. When we had a concern about our daughter about 8 months ago he treated us with respect, didn't make us feel like overly worried parents, and really took the time to make sure that we, as parents, felt ok with his recommendations. When I was in the hospital for the delivery of my son a couple of weeks ago, one of my nurses mentioned how much she likes Dr. Lutz as well. I have also seen how Dr. Lutz interacts with the staff (nurses, lab techs, etc.) in the office and he is always very friendly and courteous towards them.

We also saw Dr. Kent Williams at the Edina office a couple of months ago for a sick/urgent visit and he was very good as well. Our visit required some follow up calls from him. He was very prompt and even called me a second time after we spoke becuase he thought of some more information that he wanted to share with me.

If you are considering moving to the South/SouthWest suburbs I highly recommend Dr. Barbara Houts out of Crossroads Medical Clinics. They have offices in Chaska, Shakopee and Prior Lake. Dr. Houts works in the Chaska and Prior Lake offices. She is WONDERFUL! She is a family practice doctor taht also does OB and prenatal. She delivers her 'own' babies.

I was referred to her by a friend when I was expecting with my first. She only misses 1-2 deliveries a year. After delivery since she is a family doctor, she can also take care of the infants. She delivered all 3 of my kids. (well she delivered the first two, the 3rd 'fell out' and Dr Houts arrived a few min's later!) She is very conservative, she will take the time to talk to you and make sure all your questions are answered. She is not one to rush you out the door as you are still asking questions! She is also not afraid to refer you to a specialist if you need more in depth care.

Good Luck!
P., Shakopee

Hi M.- I have really liked Metropolitan Pediatrics. They have an office in Edina but we go to the Burnsville clinic and see Dr. O'Connell, who is great at following up with phone calls. They are a little smaller than Southdale Peds, who I have heard good things about for the most part as my sister's kids go there. Her only issue is the difficulty with continuity of care because there are so many different providers. Metro Peds is a little smaller. My son has also seen Dr. Baker, who is really good, too and just happens to almost always be the one to see us when we have a sick visit. Good Luck!!
