Looking for a New Career

You should really think about going into business for youself so that you can spend more time with your child. If it is just your passion to be in the medical field then find out what that is but medical assistant I would say go for something besides that. I would look into radiology type programs because they pay very well way more than a medical assistant and there is a high demand for people in this fields.

I wouldn't become a medical assistant. They don't make much more than $11-12 per hour. Physical Therapist assistants make a little more than that. Do you already have a college background? If so, I would recommend nursing. It shouldn't take you too long to become an RN. If you're really in a hurry, try being an LPN. Then, later if you like it you can go back to school to become an RN.

I would get my RN over a medical assistant position, because there are so many possibilities over a lifetime of different types of nursng that you can do. If you were willing to spend the time I would suggest getting your BSN, but you really won't make anymore money (or really get much more respect) for having spent the additional 2 years in college. So, I would suggest getting your associates degree in nursing - spend 2 years and have a wonderful career doing just about anything you want, and having job security (and great benefits). I am a nurse, with a bachelor's degree finishing my master's (I will be a nurse practitioner in 2009). I have worked in neurosurgical nursing, ER, and Hospice care environements as well as pulmonary, and telemetry units. Nursing is hard work at times but it is VERY rewarding and you can usually find a schedule that allows you plenty of time with your family! If you want to talk more about it feel free to contact me!

Around the age of 25, I am 37 now, I too went through a major career change. The best advice I can give you is 1) absorb as much knowledge that you can about the field and/or fields that you are contemplating before you make a leap. Contacting Bethany, as she suggested, would be a great start.
2) I took a career placement test on-line, offered free by a college. They are easy to find, you just have to google for the information. Of course back then it was harder for me to locate one. The test are very similar to the one's given in High School, or atleast when I was in HS. Now, I think you have to request to take them. Anyway--this allowed me to rethink who I was, what I wanted, and where I want to go--like a new-life growth reality check. What do I want to be when I grow up?? Because it is a personality and career matching assessment. 3) Be open and honest with yourself, and your spouse. Make the change for the right decisions, because it will fullfill your heart and give you peace, joy, and passion, because you will be a better person for yourself and for your family.

Coding pays around $15-20/hour and some places let you do it from home.

You might try an Emergency Medical Technician course and see if you like working on an ambulance. If you like it, you can make more money at it by becoming a paramedic, which would be an additional 2 years of school. The initial EMT course is usually one semester in college. i have been working as a paramedic for almost 20 years and LOVE it. It is not for everyone, but you can tell if you are going to like it or not, just by taking the EMT course. Good luck!
