I am looking for a recommendation for a GREAT neurologist/headache specialist who specializes in migraines. I would love to find someone who is interested in finding the root of my headaches, not just write prescriptions. Really needing to get better so I can get back to enjoying my 2 sweet kiddos and wonderful husband. Any help is appreciated!

What can I do next?

I second both the chiro and acupuncture. I had amazing results with acupuncture (having never tried it before) when I was looking for natural relief for severe seasonal allergies when pregnant with my 3rd child. So I totally believe in it now!
Also, while you are trying to figure this out, maybe look into getting a Baltic amber necklace to reduce the intensity and frequency of your migraines and so you don't have to resort to so many meds. Baltic amber is a resin which contains succinic acid which is a natural pain killer & anti inflammatory. The heat from your skin warms up the amber which allows it to releases it's oils into your skin and bloodstream. it works really quite well. I wear mine for headaches and get very good relief. I know of several people who suffer from migraines who say it really reduces how often they get one and that when they do get one, it is more mild. You can learn more about Baltic amber and how it works at www.hazelaid.com
You have to make sure the amber is from the Baltic region and is not set in a metal setting because it needs to touch your skin to be effective. Amber from other regions does not contain the same amount of succinic acid and is not likely to help with pain in the same way. Good luck on your quest for health! Good for you for wanting to find the root cause and not just placate the symptoms!

Hi T., If you want to get to the root of your migraines, please consider acupuncture. My mom used to have migraines 20+ days a month. She tried everything that biomedicine had to offer at the time, with no relief. She was finally desperate enough to give acupuncture a try, and it worked. After a couple months of treatment (acupuncture and Chinese herbs) she's down to one headache (not a migraine) a month associated with her periods. This was about 10 years ago!

Because of her experience, and the curing of my allergies, I decided to become an acupuncturist. If you'd like some help finding one in your area, please feel free to contact me, I'd love to help!

Are you in Oregan? You should specify this region in your question. If not, I know a great Neurologist in Metro Detroit..Migraines are sooo difficult to diagnose/prevent.

Prevention is influenced by what you put in your body and other stressors. I have found the following helps me... no caffeine, chocolate or red wine and eat a healthy diet and rest. For women, our hormones are also a trigger. Do you keep a journal of food intake, rest, cycle and migraines. I did and it was very telling. If any two factors are out of wack I end up with a Migraine. I sound like I'm doing everything right but I am NOT. I'm overweight and dont exercise enough and I pay for the times when I stretch myself too thin. This means I'm not as social as I used to be and on some days I lay around and watch movies or read with my daughter. It's not ideal but it has helped with prevention. AND this has improved my quality of life and the time I do have to be active with my family (and without migraines I have a lot more time to be active and "normal").

My neurologist has worked with me to understand the triggers. Sometimes, I think she is also my psychologist and helps me to prioritize my life and find solutions. For example, for my body I need to exercise but sleep is more important. My friends and family are all supportive individuals that don't increase my stress level. Work is work and I have to deal with it but there are techniques to use to reduce stress.

I know I'm spewing a lot of things that have worked for me. You are doing the right thing by trying to find a Doctor that will work with you to find a solution you agree with. Best of Luck.

Dr. Dale Carter at Sunset Family Practice on NW Cornell is great. She helped me with my headaches and chronic neck pain.

Have you tried a chiropractor yet? It total works for me, plus drinking lots of water.
