Looking for a Hobby

Hi ladies,

I am in some serious need of a hobby. I have never kept up w/ anything and have actually never been very good at anything. Almost everyone I know is good at something great like singing/dancing, arts and crafts, poetry or sports and I am soooo not. I would love to find something that I can be good at and really enjoy doing for more than a week or two. I've tried making jewelry w/ a friend, but I'm not very creative, I would love to scrapbook, but again I'm not creative or crafty and I am also on a severly limited budget. I do like to cook (not great at it, but I haven't killed anyone either!!), but yet again...I'm not creative and CAN NOT cook w/ out a receipe or out of a box (sad I know). I do like to work out, but have not in a year due to an injury and now I'm just lazy and can't afford to join a gym. I've asked some of my girlfriends to start a walking group, but they didn't seem too interested. I would love so much to have something that is mine that I can look forward to and be passionate about and also teach my kids to do the same. I have never set a goal and accomplished it. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions on how I can do things affordably. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Sometimes i feel the same way and have limited time and am usually tired and stressed out...lol. I decided to start reading and getting into a good book, but i only wanted like a really GOOD book, so i asked on here. Go back to April 10th i think, and look at all my responses! It's been so fun, going and getting all these books (i've made huge lists) and i've started a collection that i will read (at some point!). I have started one, 'The Time Traveler's Wife' and it is really good. Also, i enjoy running/walking on the trails... it's very refreshing, keeps me in shape, mentally and physically. But i have to have my jammin cardio song list on my ipod to keep me going! I could set you up with some GREAT cardio music if you'd like. I can make you cd's and if you have an ipod you can download them on to you ipod. Of play them in a cd player and walk on a treadmill, etc. I also have a membership at the QLS gym and i've always wanted to try raquetball but i've never had the guts (i'm fairly new to TX from Calif) to ask anyone to play with me! Also i'm a singer... it's my passion, so i want to take guitar lessons and have to get OFF my butt and ask around on how to get lessons or i'll never do it! We all have a hard time just getting started on doing something. At the time, those are kind of my things. I love to cook too, and i don't cook hard stuff, so maybe we can exchange recipe ideas... hope you found some inspiration, haha!
I.

You know, I make an effort to add ideas to anyone request on this site. I figure, they want ideas, right? I have thought about your request and have come to the conclusion that you already know what you enjoy doing. Who cares if youre not that great at something!?! Its your enjoyment level that counts!!! Like another post stated, if someone else doesnt appreciate it, thats their problem.
The one thing that I did think of, (read "between the lines") is baking. You said that you like to cook, however, from a recipe. How about starting off with a simple baking book, cookies, cakes, etc. You might find that youre quite good at it. It also seems that you would have plenty of "guina pigs" around you for the tastings!! (kids, church, friends, co-workers) Who doesnt love a homemade cookie?
Do what YOU enjoy doing. After all, isnt that what life is about?
Margaret :)

OK, I feel for ya. My neighbors call me "Betty Crocker, Suzy Homemaker, & Katie Brown all in one. And I volunteer at my kids school and red cross.
You seem to be very giving and compassionate, SO go for a walk with out your friends i think it is a great time to get away just by myself. Go to a nursing home and volunteer with the activities director and read to the residents, I am taking a cake decorating class at Hobby Lobby now and they have a new one every month. You don't have to be "good" at something to enjoy it, the longer you do it as long as you enjoy it the better you will become. I can see your point of wanting to be good at at least one thing. I tried lots of things before I finally decided on a couple of hobbies, I tried candle making, the old fashioned way but it was to messy for me. I tried crocheting but with small kids I couldn't sit very long to get into it. I guess my point is keep trying and when you enjoy it keep at it, you will get better.
my current hobbies: making candy, sewing, reading, cooking, and baking, and gardening. and am starting to dabble into cake decorating, I am just getting tired of paying someone else to do what I can learn to do.
Good luck, and enjoy what ever you do.

Hi S.. My name is T.. I too was in need of a hobby. I had my 2nd daughter 8 months ago and the epidural left me disabled. Since I wasn't able to work a full time job, so I started my own business. Part of my business includes funraisers. I think that your church would benefit greatly from a fundraiser. If you were in charge of it, it would give you a new hobby, definately with an awesome purpose. Let me know if this is something that you might be interested in learning more about... ____@____.com

Many Blessings,
T.

I don't feel creative either but that doesn't keep me from scrapbooking or quilting. I really enjoy both but don't often have time to do it. You just pick what you like and if others don't appreciate it, it's their problem.

My suggestion is to find a hobby you can do with your husband. My husband and I really enjoy dancing. It's how we met. We used to go dancing but eventually got bored with what we knew so we started taking lessons together at SSQQ. There are two ways of doing it. I don't particularly enjoy dancing with other people so I steered away from the classes. They switch partners a lot which can be good when you are first learning and they say that you get to meet a lot of people that way but it wasn't for us. We found an instructor that will teach for an hour for $50 for as many couples as you want. So we go with some friends that are basically at our level and we split the lesson. Making it $25 a piece. It's a lot of fun to learn new things and I get to spend time with my husband. Then we have something we can go do together. If you decide to start learning, SSQQ has dances and you don't have to go to a bar to practice. If you are looking for a place outside of SSQQ to practice I suggest going early to one of the country bars in town. You will avoid the crowds and drunkeness.

Good luck.

I was looking for a hobby recently and decided to teach myself how to knit. I was convinced that it was too hard to actually teach myself, but I went to my local library and checked out a step-by-step book for teenagers and I tought myself in one afternoon. I know knitting sounds very old fashioned but if you look on DIY Network or HVTV, they have a ton of really cool patterns for groovy modern stuff (such as Ipod Cozy, purses, scarves, etc.) My first project was a scarf (because it was cold) and I finished it in a few days, just working on it here and there. I don't knit very often because I don't really have much time for hobbies at the moment, but I enjoy it as something to escape school work and other stresses. I hope you find something that you enjoy...and are good at!

If you are looking for something to do that is going to make you feel good, I would suggest getting more involved with your church. It always gives me a great sense of purpose to do more and more for God.

Have a blessed day!!
