I have moved several times, and each time I needed a doctor I asked a co-worker if they liked their doctor and just went with it. The times that wasn't possible (SAHM and needing a ped), I went with a larger clinic. Right now we live just outside Springfield, IL, and we all go to Springfield Clinic. It's a fairly large network of doctors in all specialties. The doctors are all in groups - my husband and I go to a family doctor, our kids go to a pediatrician, I see an OB/GYN. All of our doctors work at Springfield Clinic. They are each in a group with 4 or 5 other doctors and many nurses, so each group feels like a small, private office. They are all networked together and can read any lab report or test result.
I really like that our doctors are all connected (and know each other). They all keep traditional hours, but there are several Prompt Care locations for urgent and after hours needs. There is one central phone number that you call call to reach any doctor's office. There is someone there to answer the phone 24/7 and nurses to answer your questions 24/7.
Like I said, I have moved several times, and there was only one time that I didn't have a doctor I really liked. One time I needed to find a pediatrician quickly, and I didn't love her. She was fine, and she was certainly competent, but I didn't love her. We were only there for about 9 months, so I kind of thought ... whatever.
If you can ask co-workers or neighbors or someone for suggestions, great. If not, I personally love the larger clinics. I think they have a great setup, wonderful resources and nurses available 24 hours a day.
