Looking for a Good School

My daughter is a rising 5th grader. The private school she has attended for the past two years, is just too expensive for our family. She was in public school prior to that, but after three years, we noticed that she was using a lot of slang language that was inappropriate, and didn't have any friends that I felt comfortable with her going to their house to play (though I let several come to our house.) Finally, the public school setting was simply not challenging her and she complained all the time of being board. All this is to say, Durham Public schools is not the answer. Does anyone have a suggestion of good schools in the area? We are even considering moving to either Orange County or Wake County if we can sell our house.

What can I do next?

Two of my kids went to Quest Academy, a Charter School in Raleigh on Baileywick Rd. There are 15 kids to a class, one class per grade and the school day ends at 1:30. Each February they take applications, so it won't help you for this school year, but next February you could put your application in. North Raleigh, up toward Creedmoor Rd and Norwood, all the way over to Leesville has some pretty good schools. You can check NC report cards to get the test scores on all the schools before you make your move. My website has some great links as well movetoraleighnorthcarolina.com Good luck

My oldest son goes to the Durham School of the Arts. We are fairly happy with most aspects of it. I do know that they do not accept any profanity. My son has had lunch detention several times for just "talking teenage boy talk" with his friends and being overheard by his teachers. They also are tough on anything that my be considered violent. One of the other things we like is the fact that they can continue all the way through 12th grade here. They have music and dance programs that are not available at other schools. The school is also associated with Duke and has Duke tutors come in and help in different areas. The only problem that you would have right now is that it is lottery only to get in and the application was due in February.

Wake Forest has some really great schools. I think that the school system has a lot to offer a family.
I do think that communication with the teacher and the school is the most important aspect of your childs education. Be very honest and let the teachers and principal know that you expect more, and don't be afraid to offer your skills or enlist the aid of other skilled parents in the daily education of your child. This can be done in the classroom so that others benifit (because if she is bored so are other kids)or in home setting. I do think that 'challenging' your daughter to 'be herself' is so very important. At her age she is starting to see the world in a different way, things that made perfect sense before are becoming questionable as her awareness of life begins to grow. At no time would I give her the feeling that she has permission to speak 'slang', as it demeans who she is and what she can be.
Find a really good church that has a great childrens program and get envolved. Know this, education is a good thing but it can never replace the love of God, and your family will benifit too. She needs friends, to broaden her horizens, but right now you have the control over who. So choose wisely.

Hi, I would suggest a charter school. Like Exploris or something. They are free of charge and the curriculum is more focused like a private school. Good luck with your search!
