We have a duplex house that was built in 1952. Both kitchens are in serious need of updating. One kitchen basically needs new cabinets, countertops and flooring. The other kitchen in our main living side we are wanting to add square footage, as well as redo everything. We are just starting to get quotes now. Any referrals and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have a house in Curits Park that was built in 1927. We are the second owners, which should tell you that when we bought the house, it needed serious updating. We've now completely renovated it. All of the work (top to bottom, front to back) was done or overseen by Kevin Frederick, who's a licensed contractor who specializes in old houses. He doesn't advertise - doesn't need to b/c all his business is word-of-mouth. Right now he's doing a second story on our cousin's house in McKinley Park. His # is ###-###-####.

I have a neighbor who is a general contractor and does all the work himself so he doesnt need to add to his prices to pay employees or help. He is great - he's redone bathrooms and kitchens all throughout our neighborhood. I dont have his phone number at work but if you get through all the above and want one more quote - let me know and i will send you his number.

Check with the Better Business Bureau. I have always had good luck using one of their accredited members. www.bbb.org

I know a fabulous contractor in San Jose... Vern Easthouse. Unfortunately, I do not know his phone number. I have known him for years and he did work on my parents' home years ago. Good luck in finding someone good and honest.

We used a company called RAL Builders and they were absolutely fabulous to work with and did exceptionally good work for a fair price. They weren't the lowest bid, but they were no where near the highest -- they were just fair. The owner, Phil, is very professional and a great guy to work with. I've worked with lots of contractors over the years, including commercial and he is the only one I would recommend hands-down. He has two divisions: one is remodel and the other is sunrooms and patio covers. Their remodeling division added a full balcony on the second floor of our house and you could never tell it wasn't part of the original building. It's been several years now and we haven't even had one warranty call that needed to be made. Their phone number is ###-###-####. You can tell Phil the Aldens recommended him.

The best advice I can give is to always use a licensed contractor. You can go on to www.cslb.com and check a contractors license status on the website. Since they have to be bonded and carry liability insurance it is really the smart way to go. Also if you sign with a general contractor ask them if they use subcontractors and make sure those subcontractors are licensed also. Some general contractors will say they don't subcontract out but in reality most of them do. A subcontractor can lien your house if they do not get paid from the general contractor. My husband is a licensed electrical contractor and we always only hire people who are licensed because we are aware of the problems that can occur. My husband has a saying when it comes to home remodeling "Cheap always comes out expensive in the end."

My husband has a licensed construction team that can do the work right for a reasonable price. My husband does great work and has worked on many homes. You can call my husband and talk to him further about your needs and getting a quote. That number is ###-###-#### and his name is Spencer. Give us a call and see what we can do for you! :)
