why would you even think of buying books at the store this time of year? ever hear of yard sales? this is the season, i went 15 miles today and passed 4, you can always find books at yard sales, 10 books for $1, deals like that, sometimes people will let you load up bags and boxes of books at yard sales and take all you can hual for like $2. dont spend money if you dont have to,

How about the library?

The library sells books they no longer need for 25-50 cents ask at your library!ask friends chances are they have bunches to get rid of

I see that some moms have suggested the library and although it's great kids do love to read the same books over and over again. It's always good to have the favorites to keep so my suggestion is to find a good used book store. I don't know where you are but the best I have ever found is The Recycle Barn in Bethlehem. The store is clean, well organized and has great specials regularly. The prices are great too.

Try a local thrift shop or consignemnt store. I have gotten many books from the thrift store for around $.50 - $1.50. The books are hardly used and I can buy a ton at that price. Also try half.com. I have gotten some good deals there. The best way is to purchase from one seller at a time and then your shipping costs are reduced. Good Luck! Keep up the reading. My daughter is now 3 and still loves to be read to. It is our special time together.

Join the library! Our local library is free to join. You can check out all the books and find out which ones your daughter particularly loves. Then, maybe you can purchase favorites to use at home. Good luck--I think reading to your kids is one of the very best things you can do for them.

When my son was younger he loved the books by Sandra Boyton. We have a whole collection of them. Now that he is older (3), I enrolled him in the Dr. Suess book club. He absolutly loves the books because of the rhyming and silly pictures and it is building a collection of books that he will be able to read and enjoy by himself as he gets older and enters school.

We love Can You Hop? by Lisa Lawston or Lawson. My daughter is 6 months and is ga-ga over the googley eyes. My son loved the book and I used it through pre-school with him, and often used it teaching children's yoga because there are so many actions and animals to act out. I also liked Melanie Walsh's board books. I found it most helpful to go to the library or the book store and show the books to my kids to see what got them excited. I also picked books that I liked, since I knew I'd be reading them gazillions of times! I think with my son I had a free subscription to Babytalk magazine and found lots of good recommendations each month in the back of that. If you don't subscribe to any parenting mags, you could browse through them at the grocery store or book store, usually near the back of the mag, for ideas on winning books and dvd's. I also would look up recommended books on Amazon and follow links to other books that readers liked. Your local library probably has a baby and parent story hour. Go to that to learn fun sing-a-longs and read different books each week... and to meet other parents!

I don't have a recommendation for a book club but just wanted to suggest checking local dollar stores and discount stores. I have bought a ton of books (including board books) about animals, nursery rhymes, shapes, colors, first words, holiday stories, etc at these stores. My kids love books, but as you said some are pricey and they tend to get ruined in little hands.

My kids' favorite books are a Sesame Street set of books on colors, shapes, foods and numbers (Dollar Store), Baby Einstein books (Tuesday Morning), Elmo and Friends Look and Find (Toys R Us), Elmo's ABC Book (Walmart), Teletubbies - Who Spilled the Tubby Custard (lift-the-flap book from library sale) and a prayer book (Dollar Store).

Hi...I belong to the Children's Book of the Month Club. The web address is www.cbomc.com. The first time you join you get 8 books for $2.00. After your initial purchase, you have to purchase at least 4 books at club price over a 2 year period. They have a grat selection and you choose what age group you want recommendations for. I think they are great. I have gotten some really great deals. Plus, every time you purchase a book you earn points that you can redeem for discounts on another order.

If you don't want to spend the money, I agree with the other mothers about the library or even the dollar store. I found some great stuff there too.

I see that others have recommended the library but I wanted to encourage you further to attend. Most libraries have storytimes by age groups and your daughter would love it. I started taking my daughter to the Chester Springs library when she was just months old. They read books to the babies, sang songs and blew bubbles at the end of each session. Check out your local library to see if they offer something similar.

I apologize if this has already been suggested, but what about going to the library weekly? My son is nearly 4, and he LOVES going to the library. Our local one has a whole room dedicated to kids, with games, blocks, puzzles, and a kiddie-sized computer with preschool software on it. We spend about 30 minutes playing, then pick out books to take home. That's a great way to introduce all different types of books, at a very low cost. Also, if you have a Barnes and Noble (or any other bookstore) nearby, they have children's story hour twice a week or so. That's another great way for stories to be read and not spend the $$ on them.

Also, look into Half-Priced Books. It's a great store, and they have a good selection of books in all areas, and agin, not as pricey as you would find in regular stores.

One last suggestion: places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Value City are also good places to find books at a lower price.
