Looking for a Good Cake Recipe for Sculpting

My son's 2nd birthday is on Sat, and I'm planning on making him a 3D truck cake (a semi) I'm looking for a good recipe that tastes yummy and is also firm enough to withstand being sculpted. I plan on frosting it with butter cream frosting, not fondant. I'm pretty good in the kitchen, but baking is not really my forte, so any other suggestions are also welcome!

What can I do next?

Hi A.! I made my little girl a 3D bear cake for her first birthday. I used one box of regular cake mix and one boxed pound cake mix...the pound cake helped to prevent the cake from falling apart when I took it out of the 3D pan. HTH and I hope your son has a wonderful birthday:o)

One thing I've done when frosting a sculpted cake, is freeze it first and frost while frozen. It frosts easier and it won't tear up the cake.

You can use any regular cake box mix. I found the trick is to freeze it before hand. Whenever, I am doing anything with frosting and cake it works miracles to freeze the cake before.
Also if for some reason you have struggles with cake. I have made the base completely out of rice krispies and the kids love it just as much. It is really easy to sculpt and frost.

I love this recipe. I use it all the time for the cakes I do for my family and the ones I sell. It holds up great.

Any cake recipe that you like will work. After baking, remove it from the pan and wrap it in saran wrap and freeze it. When you are ready to frost and assemble the cake, take it out of the freezer and use a serated knife to shape. It works well

Just use a regular cake mix, adjust for altitude and bake in a rectangle pan. Remove from pan and cool completely then cut into pieces for the truck. You will probably need to bake two cakes like this to have enough to make a truck. Then freeze the pieces, covered with plastic wrap. Once frozen brush off any loose crumbs and frost pieces together. You may need to refreeze once you get all the pieces together. Once you've got it put together you can frost and decorate the top and sides. Good Luck. R.
