Looking for a Family Therapist for 14 Year Old Son in or near San Mateo

Our 14 year old son is very depressed and has difficulties both in school and at home, especially this past year. He has been diagnosed with ADD and depression. He was seeing an individual therapist but it is suggested that we go to family therapy. We think that our son would benefit most from a male therapist. Our son does not want to go and is difficult to get through to right now. He is very angry and closed up. He has said that if he must go, he wants a "hippy therapist that can cleanse his soul" although he is not religious and shuns all religious types of activities. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

Try Robert Durazzo - I don't have a phone number for him, but you can probably google him. I went to him as a teenager for similar things that you mentioned your son is going through. I loved him. He may not look like a hippy, but he is very easy going.

hi L."

my name is sandy and i have three boys. a few years ago we were separated with my husband of twenty years.... so our youngest boy who was 9 at the time, got very upset with us and depressed. he also has some learning difficulties, and is gifted in social sciences at the same time...

we do not believe in pills, so i decided to look for alternatives, and i found reiky... acupuncture and chinese formulas like gui pi tang.... my son is happy and learning so much about himself now , that at school and at home he stands his ground, treats all his shortcomings with a positive attitude of is just a challenge, nothing i can not do.... it is great..

at home we always eat healthy, and he takes his lunch to school... because out of the three, he is the tallest and heavy set(bones), and the one that needs help doing homework,etc... the other two are extremely smart and also help him because he is the youngest...

hang in there, at home please have a positive attitude towards challenges, because we all have some lesson to learn all the time, and we do not have to rely on labels.... rather than focus on our strengths to make those challenges a stepping stone in our way to a happy path...
treat your son with love and a normality that he will not see his challenges as unsurmountable mountains.... he is 14 so he is also changing... how is he in sports? does he have a group of friends to share sports, sleep overs, go to park or burgers with?
we all need a social support that extends from our parents and family, so please look into his nutrition, exercise, friends, school work, tutors and mentors if he needs them.... as well as a strong family support that will not let him break at this challenge.... hang in there.... after every storm the sun is brighter and the light always gives us rainbows....

warmly,
sandy

Kathy Mayer in Burlingame. Unbelieveably loving and great. We took both of our sons to her. Look her up. If not her, ask her if she knows of any really good male therapists. We have another one if this doesn't work for you but it may be closer to Palo Alto area. Let me know and I can get that name and number for you.
