To get something dependable at that price you need to know somebody who knows somebody who will cut you a break.

Be careful buying from unknown sources because you don't want to spend $1500 then spend thousands to get it right.

Good luck

Sorry - good luck. With the Cash for Clunkers program - it's hard to get a good, used car anymore.

If you are looking for charity - go to your local church. You might find someone there who has an older car they no longer want. Ask the pastor, priest, rabbi, to help you.

Try Craigslist.org - do NOT go alone. this is what I found on craigslist. if you are in Waldorf, you aren't far from me.

My husband sells cars, but in Vegas. Many of them know each other. I know some people can be rude, but if he isn't able to help someone on the lot, he will refer them to someone at a smaller lot or at a rental place that has a vehicles in your budget.

By the way, have you tried the rental lots? We bought our used KIA from a rental sales lot and we have had that car for 3+ years now [knocking on wood]. It's been a great little car for us and we put all the miles on that car.

Have you tried craigslist? Really the only other way I know to get a cheap dependable car is word of mouth but that takes time.

I would check on craigslist, ebay and autotrader.

If you are not comfortable doing that, go to your church or other charitable organization to see what they can do to help you.
