My husband and I have been married for almost 12 years and have 3 little boys. We are beginning to plan a 3 night getaway for just the 2 of us. We had thought about a cruise, but the 3 night ones are all during the weekend (we need to go during the week, my mom is watching our boys and they're in school during the week--too much to ask for her to keep them over a weekend). Also, that's hurricane season in September (when we're planning to go), so there are not many choices. We and are looking to spend no more than $1500 total for the trip. We'd like relaxing, but also want a little something to do while we're there. We're planning on flying, but could stay at a nicer hotel if we were within a 6-8 hour drive of St. Louis. Does anyone have any suggestions?? We've thought about Las Vegas or Mexico (there are lots of those all-inclusive resorts there). I'd love some recommendations about places other couples have gone on a getaway trip on somewhat of a budget.
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT A B& B? WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO A B&B IN LAKE OF THE OZARKS FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IT IS CALLED BASS AND BASKETS. THEY ARE THE MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE YOU WILL EVER MEET. YOU ARE PART OF THE FAMILY WHEN YOU WALK IN. THEY ALSO HAVE THE BEST BREAKFAST YOU WILL EVER HAVE AT A B&B. YOU DIFFENTLY WONT GO AWAY HUNGRY. IT IS DIFFENTLY A PLACE TO RELAX AND NOT TOO FAR AWAY FROM THE KIDS AND MOST OF ALL INEXPENSIVE. I HOPE YOU WILL CALL.
I don't know the extent of their weekday trips, but there can be great deals from St. Louis on www.worryfreevacations.com. They are usually via charter planes to Mexico and other carribean destinations. For example, you can sometimes get a flight to Jamaica for $200 per person. Good luck and enjoy!

I have a suggestion that may sound unbelievable: Springfield, Ill. Here's why: My husband and I had a little getaway weekend a few years back that we really enjoyed. There is an incredible bed & breakfast there called the "Inn at 835." It is as nice as many nicer hotels, the food is good and the service is outstanding. You can rent a room with a private veranda and really relax and have space for yourself. Granted there's not a LOT of stuff in Springfield, but in a weekend we were able to find plenty. It depends on your interests, but there are lots of historic sites (it's the state capital and home to Lincoln), there is an outstanding Frank Lloyd Wright house to tour (The Dana Thomas House), there are antiques shops in a quaint, walkable downtown area, and in September I think they have a Route 66 classic car event. There are some really good restaurants (Mauldener's sp?, and others). Also, you could make a beautiful fall drive to get there by driving up the river road, and stopping at various points of interest (Alton, Grafton, Elsah, etc.). Not only is this an affordable weekend getaway, but you'd probably have to try really hard to spend $1500! As a romantic weekend getaway, we loved it because it wasn't fast paced or stressful, just a weekend to spend with each other... uninterrupted. Good luck!!

Sedona, AZ!!! You can fly into Phoenix for cheap on Southwest. It is a magical and relaxing place. Of course, Chicago is always fun too.

Congrats on getting a vacation! I'm sure with 3 little ones, you could use a get away!
I have been to Flordia, Las Vegas, and recently Mexico. My work gives us promotional trips so my husband and I have been fortunate enough to be able to get away. In my opinion, I did not like Vegas at all. Our hotel and airfare were paid for by our company and it was still an expensive trip. There is nothing to do there but spend money and if you want to have fun you have to spend alot. My husband and i don't gamble so we didn't enjoy it. The only thing we liked was looking at the hotels in the daytime. I guess we're boring.
I just got back from Mexico on February 2nd of this year and I must say I absolutely fell in love with it. It was the best trip I have ever been on and I swore to my husband we have to go again and bring our daughter. We didn't pay for the trip ourselves but for a 3 night stay, with airfare and hotel, our company paid $1400.00 per couple. The resort was all-inclusive, so we brought $100 with us and used it for tipping and shopping and it was plenty! We were in Cancun and the beaches were absolutely beautiful. We only left the resort to do a little shopping and we walked to the mall. We could have stayed at the resort all three days and been completely content. It was definitely the best trip we have taken so far, even my husband agreed and he has been to Hawaii before we were married.

Hi, my name is Ara and I am from Mexico. I have been in St. Louis for 3 years and I really love this City, but I can tell you, planning a trip like this with your husband must be really exitting. You should look for a beach in Mexico. I will recomend you Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta or Cozumel. Cancun is really beatifull but very "American" you will find a lot of amercian fast food and night clubs for young people. Good look in your trip and good look for your mom too.

Hi J.,
I saw your note about needing a little vacation within a budget. My company owns Condo Hotels is some very exciting locations. You already mentioned Vegas and that you need a midweek trip and not a weekend. The rates in Vegas are lower during the week, and air fare on Southwest to Vegas can also be very inexpensive. We have been flying to Vegas for business and hardly ever pay more than $200 round trip. Our property there is at The Signature at MGM Grand, recently voted 2008 #1 Luxury Hotel in the USA! We also have another Condo Hotel on the Intracoastal waterway (near the beach) in Indian Shores Florida (you would fly into Tampa.) SW also services Tampa so again you can get a reasonable airfare and that property rents for $750 per WEEK, but I could prorate for you for a shorter stay! The best thing about the Condo Hotels is that each come with a full kitchen so by eating breakfast and lunch at "home" you can save your budget and splurge on nice dinners. Please email me direct at ____@____.com and I would be happy to send you some price quotes!
