Looking Do Do Some Volunteer Work

Well to start I have been out of work since last November, and I am starting to go crazy at home. My kids are in school all day, and I have thus far had no luck finding employment. Quite honestly I do not want to go back to the same career, but in this economy it is even harder to switch careers w/o going back to school. That is an option also, but hard when you are already short a paycheck.

So, I am looking to do some volunteer work for 2 reasons. I need to get out of the house and be busy, and maybe this will help me to get a paying job.

Does anyone volunteer with a particular organization they really enjoy?

Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

You haven't said what your religion is, but I'd start there - I just love the work I do through my church & the friends I've met there. Or if you're not religious, what is your passion? What do you love? Figure that out & go for it - do you love animals, then volunteer at Willowbrook Wildlife Haven or be a Brookfield Zoo Docent. There are so many places that need help and you're looking for something to do. It'd be great if you could figure out what would give you some fulfillment. Also, check with your kids' school, they often need moms who can re-shelve books and be library helpers, and help with other things.

Good luck & I sincerely hope you find something that will satisfy your longing.

I LOVE working for the YMCA and they are always looking for volunteers and part time help. I really believe in their practices and philosophies of being a non-profit serving families and communities. They do so much to provide "scholarships" for club memberships, preschool and day camps to those in need. It's a wonderful, family oriented environment that seems to have it's priorities straight.

My mom helps out at the local food pantry/soup kitchen. She says it really keeps one focused on what's important and being grateful for what you have. I know they are always looking for help sorting, making meals, etc. You can see what churches or homeless shelters in your area need help.

Good luck - and good for you!

I volunteer for Mothers and More. It's a great mom's group with lots to do with and without kids. I currently volunteer as a Programmer (deciding what fun stuff we do) and serve on the Board of Directors. I also serve on the committee for the kids clothing/toys resale we do twice a year which funds our outings. Check out the websites at www.mothersandmore.ord and dupagemothersandmore.org.

Email me if you have any questions! We are always looking for new members/volunteers!

The YMCA, the Red Cross, Lazarus House, churches usually have something they're working towards, you can do something yourself like a book drive in your neighborhood for a women's & children's homeless shelter. There's a lot you can do. Think about what inspires you and Google it, I'm sure there's some sort of a drive or fundraiser surrounding it. Good luck!
