We live in Lake Zurich and love the free and open to the public beach, Breezewald Beach. It has a park and picnic area. It is pretty small but no one is ever there and great sand. It is located off of Old Rand Road, near Mexico Lindo.
Hey guys,
Just wondering if you know of any great public beaches on the north shore. We live in Mundelein, and have 4.5 year old twins. Any ideas? FREE would be best.
Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,
You could try Independence Grove in Libertyville. Admission to the park and parking are free. Admission to the beach is $4 or $2 if you get there after 3pm. Hours are 10am til 6pm. Here's the link for the official park website:

Illinois State Beach also has a swimming beach ($1 per person for the beach, the park itself is free), but it's a little far from Mundelein. With gas prices the way they are, you might end up spending the difference in admission on gas money instead. Here's the site anyway:

With 4-1/2 year olds, you may also want to consider that Independence Grove has lifeguards and Illinois State Beach doesn't.
Have fun wherever it is you end up!

All of the North Shore beaches are open to the public. However, many of them require a local resident sticker to park or charge non-residents to use the beach. If you are looking for a Lake Michigan beach, there is Illinois State Beach in Zion. Also, Independence Grove, in Libertyville, has a lake with a beach that is open to Lake County Residents.
Glencoe Beach is nice -- there's even a playground on the beach. Parking can be a pain though when it's busy.
Diamond lake beach is two mintues from you but it is not free
