Liver Problems During Pregnancy?

Has anyone experienced liver problems during pregnancy? I found out I may have suffered "acute liver failure brought on from pregnancy" with my last child, but the doctor can't give me a difinitive diagnosis. The pregnancy went fine, but we didn't find out until after my baby was born (I felt fine). Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Now my OB doctor doesn't want me having anymore kids, which we were really hoping to do. There is an option to continue with a high-risk OB, but I don't want to put my life or a new baby's life in danger. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I would go see a specialist in liver issues - yes there are docs out there that specialize in liver (hepatic) failure and its treatment - before making any decisions. I would want to know more from someone who knows more about that one issue before I make any decisions. Just my thoughts though. Best of luck finding answers.

Try 'Dr. Christophers Liver and gall bladder' which can be purchased at Good Earth and some other health stores (Whole foods doenst sale his stuff). I would check out your diet etc. too and you may be shocked to find your liver problems are solved. Seriously. Dr. Christophers liver and gall bladder and lower bowel have totally helped me. Good luck.

I also agree that I would talk to a midwife first. If they feel they cannot safely help you, they will send you back to an OB, but it never hurts to ask. I would also get a doula to help you sort through your options.

Why don't you get a couple of second opinions. All docs respond differently to situations and you might find one that has a success rate in this area. Try contacting MidTown Obstectrics and Gynocology, I use Dr. Zarlengo there, he is a pioneer in many procedures and difficulties.

Good luck to you!

I have a friend who had this- I think that's what she said it was, I know it was something with the liver and pregnancy - and she has 4 children - she just has to watch it, it doesn't happen every time, but if it does they induce the baby as early as safely possible, because the most likely complication is sudden death of the baby without warning, resulting in stillbirth. Having said that, with good care, it can be done.

I would go to the website www.blueribbonbaby.org and follow that diet. You also might want to check with an herbalist about taking milk thistle as well as dandelion root since both really help the liver. Also you might want to see a viseral therapist who could work on your liver, that helped me alot, the biggest issue with my liver was the fact that is was so smashed by baby that it was having issues with working.

I would also consult with a midwife. They know more about handling things naturally than OB's do.

I have not experienced acute liver failure with any of my 5 pregnancies. However, if your liver has some sort of compromising condition to start with, then pregnancy will only make it worse.

I would examine your diet and environment and remove anything that will clog your liver--anything that makes it work extra hard to filter toxins. DON'T eat liver, by the way. As the filtering organ, it's full of really bad stuff, and I'm sure you can imagine what would be filtered out of a feedlot cow.

Herbs such as dandelion root and milk thistle are very effective at cleansing the liver. If I were in your position, I would undergo a major cleansing routine, carefully look at my diet and environment, and then possibly have a liver function test before trying it again. Also, there are liver cleanses you can do that will remove gall stones, and pep up the function of the liver--but I would do some dandelion root and milk thistle first. If you can't find them locally, or they are pricey, try Swanson's Herbals--we order from them and they are fast and very reasonable. There's a lack of herb stores where I live.

Best wishes and blessings!
