The brightest star in the sky is Sirius. Also known as the Dog Star since it's a part of Canis Major (Greater Dog). In Greek it means glowing or scorcher.

Yay for the update! Sorry, I teach this, so the prev Q had me just blink for a moment and go Ummmmm...

Titans (preGreek... losing side in the War of the Titans between the Olympians and Titans. And we think OUR kids are out to get cranky)
Pallas = God of War
Perses = God of Destruction (Different from Greek Hero Perseus)

The greatest warrior of all time was Achilles

Heracles (Hercules in Roman) was a close second, but noted more for his strength and the 7 trials than his prowess in battle ALSO a 'god of hunting' for a nearby (macedonian) people, but not in the GrecoRoman pantheon. There, Heracles is a demigod / half god half human hero, not a full god (major or minor).

Perseus is another of the most famous (slew medusa)

Ares & Mars were the male gods of war
(Artemis/Diana was the goddess of the hunt, and Athena/Minerva the Goddess of Battle Strategy)

Orion was the Huntsman Zeus places up in the night sky
Sirius (the dog star) is his dog / Canis Major has the dog star, but Canis Major AND Minor,... and all the stars in each constellation are referred to as Orion's Dogs as well. There's a long list of their names that I always have to look up... here's the partial list : Leucomelaena, Maera, Dromis, Cisseta, Lampuris, Lycoctonus, Ptoophagus, Arctophonus.

Of Greek & Roman... the Spartans were the only people singly devoted to warcraft / most famous warriors (and may have started Rome, but that's a little murky)

Another warrior race were the Fenian Warriors (Gaelic)

Jumping around to other mythologies (Although I've really only scratched the surface above).. MOST Gods of the hunt weren't... in nearly all cultures it was the GODDESS of the hunt. The Lion Goddess, in Ancient Egypt, Artemis/Diana in GrecoRoman times, etc.) HOWEVER:

- Woden : Norse God of the Wild Hunt / Great Hunt
- Mixcoatl : Aztec God of the Hunt
- Opachtli : Aztec God of Hunting/Fishing

Good start?

Well, if you or someone you know enjoyed the Percy Jackson series, you could go with Perseus. He was a pretty tough warrior. Or how about Horus, the ancient Egyptian god of war, from the Kane Chronicles? As you might be able to guess, I have a child who LOVED the Rick Riordan mythology-based series.

Another option might be Ajax (another Trojan War hero) or Aeneas, who was credited with founding Rome after fleeing Troy when it fell...

ETA: Anubis, the Egyptian God of Death, who just happened to be represented as a man with a dog's head, could be a good fit too :)

I think you're thinking of Orion the hunter and Aries/Mars the god of war.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Zephyr (mean west wind / peace) and Sirius are two names I personally love, but that's just me. I also love Phoebe and Penelope for girls.

I think the Norse names are good too. Thor, Oden, Beowulf, Grendel, Loki, (the last two were monster/devil types so maybe not those names unless the dog is hard to train. Ha-Ha) and so on.

Marvel comic characters might be good too. I knew a dog named Batman once. Fit him well.

In real life, Weimaraners are sometimes called the "Gray Ghost" because of their fur's complexion. It makes them look like eerie black labs. That said, Dusty, Smokey, Charro, Cole, Mesquite, Casper, Chipotle, Grady etc. might be different or fun.

Never heard of Blue Weimaraners, maybe just call him "Blue."

Ronin

Japanese. A ronin (浪人 ,rōnin?) was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185–1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless from the ruin or fall of his master, or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege. Rōnin might be hired as yōjimbō (bodyguards or mercenary fighters) by villagers, merchants, or others in need of protection. In this way, many ronin were extended a respect equal to that of master-sponsored samurai by the general population; they were actually preferred by Zen masters, artists, and philosophers over the faceless samurai counterparts, who remained ultimately subservient to their Samauri masters.

We had a girl dog named Tala, which is native American for "stalking wolf". My husband thought that was a cool name! But it's still pretty too.
