Little Boy Won't Give up Small Shoes

My son is 22 months. He has Mickey Mouse gym shoes that light up. I am sure they are too small but he won't wear any other shoes. It took all winter to get him to occasionally wear boots. He isn't really talking yet so I can't get his reason for the stubbornness.Any suggestions on how to get him to wear sandals this summer or new gym shoes?

What can I do next?

My kids always fell for the " I don't know where they went, I guess we will have to go get some more" trick. If you make them disappear in the night, the only thing he can do is pitch a fit for a while, look for them, and finally will have to resign to the fact that he indeed has to go with you to get some more shoes. I did it with their bottles too--we made a big deal about going to get some sippy cups...since the store was " all out of bottles" LOL.

Ha, I remember those days! I am pretty low impact (aka lazy) and would probably just say, "Oh look, new shoes, cool" and make sure the old pair have been donated so there is no chance I could give in and go find the other pair when he starts to wail. Or I would put on his shoes/socks while he was sleeping (like, dress him in his day clothes the night prior and let him sleep in those) then just pull on the shoes and socks before he wakes! Then, as soon as he wakes, bring him outside to play so he won't be so eager to remove the new shoes!

My daughter had a nightgown like that. Way too small, but she loved it. So I just bought the same thing one size bigger (it was a tiny different but she didn't notice).
If you can't find the shoes in a local store, check ebay or google it online. You'll find something really close.

They probably even have a close design in sandals, too.

I kind of agree with the previous poster. He's pretty young to be listening to him don't ya think? I have a child (who's 4 today) who's a lot like your child. He only likes to wear certain things, sometimes he gets what he wants and sometime he doesn't. I wouldn't give him too many choices being that he's not even 2 yet...you don't want him thinking he can always get his way. Remember, mommy DOES know best. :)

Maybe you can find the same ones or something similar in a larger size. Zappos has light up Mickey shoes if you want to take a look. http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7519560.html

He is 22 months old. You put the shoes you want him to wear on his feet. Period. If the Mickey shoes are too small, throw they away. I promise you, he'll get over it and will not be scared for life because you, the parent, put shoes on his feet that fit properly and were appropriate for the weather.

'Lose' them somewhere in the house. Make them completely unaccessable so he has no other choice but to wear a different pair. Out of sight, out of mind.

If it's the Mickey he likes, you might be able to get him a pair of sandals with a character that he really loves. I had a newphew that hated socks and mittens, but would wear them if they had Barney on them. My daughter often doesn't want to take off her PJs or shirts if they have something she likes on them, so we have to offer something equally cool--a shirt with hearts or a fuzzy black dog, or dinosaur PJs, etc. We just show her the new one and point out how neat it is, and she agrees to put it on, letting the other one go.

I think it was in family fun magazine this month where one of the readers sent in a way her kid made sandals out of old gym shoes. Basically cut off the toe and heals but left the laced part. Maybe you could modify them in some way to be sandals?

ANother idea is to post a picture of them shoes on various websites where moms gather saying you need the next size up of that shoe. I bet there are plenty of parents that bought that shoe style who wouldn't mind giving you an outgrown pair.

Take him to the shoe store with you & have him choose his new shoes or sandals.

We have had teh same problem in our house. The only additional suggestion I have for you is that each of my kids has someone to whom they give their things that are too small. It has been wonderful because as soon as something doesn't quite fit anymore they bring to me saying - "time to give this to____" from there I determine if it can be passed on and move it right on out of the house.
Note: this works well because we have a network of friends and family who circulate clothing.

Maybe take him with to the store and let him help pick new shoes out. Maybe new shoes that light up will get him excited enough to forget about the old pair.

my son is 3 and wouldn't give up his "tap shoes" (penny loafers). I finally found a similar pair in his size. Maybe he just likes the light up kind... let him pick?
