I have thought about these things since they first came out...tried to convince my husband we needed one while I was pregnant (no luck) but anyway, Now that we have this pup who LOVES cat poop (she got introuble like 3 times in less than 10 minutes today) I am thinking about getting one again. I looked at a littermaid at walmart last night it was about $90 seems really expensive for a dang litter box but is it worth it? Anyone have one? What is the good, bad and ugly details on this?
I saw you have to buy "hard clumping litter" but someone must have been stocking up on kitty litter because the aisle was almost empty so I couldn't really compare prices etc. How often must you change the cartridge thingy? See I really don't know a thing. I only have one cat. She actually likes to "go" outside so doesn't use her litterbox unless she has to, so not as often as a only indoor cat, but I completely change and clean her litter box at least once a week. More often if the dog has been in there because the cat turns up her nose and will not even go in there unless it has been scribbed of all dog scent~pursnickity cat.
So just wanted your thoughts on this.... moms are the best about real life reviews on products!
Thanks

Hi, Jess,

We love our Littermaid, and it still works after four years. Yes, 90.00 is a lot, but what I always do with anything I consider expensive is to break it down. If it only lasts for three years, as someone else mentioned theirs did, that makes it $30. per year. That's $2.50 per month. Is it worth it to you to pay $2.50 per month to have the peace of mind of knowing the dog's not getting into it? If so, buy it. :)

Blessings on your day,
J.

Hello,
A few different thoughts here -
1. I bought one and my then approx 9 year old cat would not use it. They tell you to set up the new one along with the old one for a few weeks and then when you start seeing evidence that she is using it a few times you can remove the old one. Good Luck
2. You can probably find one cheaper on craigslist. When my pet fountain broke I bought a new one of there for 1/2 the price of new - the seller's pets wouldn't use it.
3. You didn't really say what you have curently but you could also try a covered box. We had a dog that did that I bought one of those covered boxes where the cover/door/arch comes down in front of the box about 1/2 way like a cave - a difficult feat for a dog to achieve. They also have boxes now that the cat enters from the top, that might work too.
4. I have heard on those automatics that you have to use their litter or it doesn't work, gets jammed just FYI.
Good Luck!

I had two indoor cats and used the Littermaid. It was AWESOME! I HATED scooping cat poop! LOL! I just used Tidy Cats Muli-Cat litter in mine and it worked just fine. I only had to change the litter about once a month, since it scoops everything right away. The little plastic collector things are the most costly part. I would re-use mine for a few weeks, depending on how dirty they got. I would empty it out, spray it with bleach, rinse it well, then let it dry. It doesn't sound like your cat goes in the box a lot, so there wouldn't be a big problem with re-using the plastic things. If your dog likes to get in your box, I'd try a covered litter box. That *should* keep your pup out!

We had one for our cat. I didn't last as long as I would have liked for $90.00. It only lasted about 3 years. It worked well, the dogs and kids stayed out and the smell was a lot less. My cats used it just fine. It was pretty gross to empty, but that's to be expected. I was happy with ours, and if I had a dog eating poop problem again, I would probably purchase another.

My vet said to put the kitty box as we call it in a bigger cardboard box. Cut the kitty a little door just big enough for her but not poochie.
We had the same issues. we just forbidded him from enbteing the bathroom without one of us and it took a week to break him. We put the kitty box in the bathroom and just left the door ajar just enough for her to enter.

Alot of expense for 1 kitty. we have 3 cats and 2 poop lovin' dogs(most dogs will eat cat poop if they can).We have a covered box for kitties, and it is on top of the storage container of dog food with a mat in front to catch litter feet when they jump down. Works great, and I don't have to bend down to clean the box. (We also feed the kitties up on a set of shelves hubby made and carpeted so the dogs can't bug them while they're eating. They love their "condo", and climbing on it to eat teaches them to scratch there instead of on the furniture.)
