Lining of Uterus Too Thick, Anyone Else?

Hi. So I've been having really heavy and painful periods which is not normal for me at all. I went to my ob and they did an ultra sound of my uterus a couple weeks ago. They just called me today and said that the lining of my uterus is a lot thicker than they would have liked to see and they want me to come in and talk to them about doing either a biopsy or a D&C. Has anyone had this happen? How did it turn out? I'm really nervous right now. I did a google search (I know, bad me) and some were saying cancer! I'm only 32 years old!
If you had a biopsy or a D&C done, did it hurt? I can't be put under because I have severe reactions and it makes me horribly sick. Literally I can not even turn my head with out throwing up for about 24 hours. I had my gallblader out in 2006 and I ended up back in the ER after they sent me home because I couldn't stop throwing up. I'm really freaking myself out right now!
If you've had this done before, please share your experience with me and tell me it's not as bad as I'm thinking.
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for sharing your stories and giving great advice to me. I am feeling a lot better now, still nervous, but a lot better than I was. If I do have to do anything that they have to put me under for, I will definatly talk to them about how I did after my last surgery and make sure they know all my bad side effects. Cheryl is an amazing person! She has helped me out so many times since we moved to the area 2 years ago. Thank you Cheryl for everything!!

Thanks. I'm still very nervous about the whole thing. I have my appointment to just talk to my dr. about it on the 12th (my day off work), but I might see if I can come in sooner because I just can't sit here for 2 weeks and wait. I'm not a patient person when it comes to things like this, lol.

Cheryl, Joseph said he will take off work. He already feels bad enough that he can't take off work to take me and the kids to the airport in 3 weeks, so there is no way he would miss this. He has a great boss and tells him that family comes first, so there won't be a problem with him taking off. He can't take us to the airport because he has some training class that day :( Thank you so much though!!!

Call me. I will go in with you.

The D&C is done under sedation. You will need someone to drive you home. I will be happy to that. you MIGHT experience discomfort after the procedure -cramping, etc.

You are not alone. Tell me when it's being done and I will come get you and take you home and be with you until Joseph comes home.

Hi Hon,

I know, it's very stressful. This happened to me five years ago, when I was 40 years old. My period (which was always erratic my entire life, with very long stretches in between my periods, and when I did get a period, they lasted for 8 days) suddenly became very, very close together (like 21 days, then 19 days, then 18 days, when my periods were usually 31 days apart and sometimes even 61 days apart) and I had very, very heavy periods with lots of blood clotting.

It scared me to death! It was SO not normal. (although my periods themselves weren't normal either)

I too underwent an ultrasound, and the GYN found hyperplasia; mine was 11 cm. Probably caused by my very erratic periods in which my lining never sloughed off enough and so it just kept building up over time.

I opted to undergo a NovaSure Ablation (NA), where they burn the inner lining of the uterus off. In my case, it stopped my periods (yeah!) as well as it makes me unable to have children (which is okay, as we have one daughter and we were done having kids; I had already had had my tubes tied before having the NA done). My GYN did a biopsy before she did the NA surgery, and the biopsy came back negative for cancer. What a relief. I was not asleep when she did the biopsy--it was done before I went to the hospital to have the NA done (I think it's done almost like a Pap smear, if I remember correctly).

Try not to stress out until you know all the facts; then you can make a decision as to what to do. I know; easier said than done. For me, the hardest part was having everything done fast and quick, because I was concerned about whether or not I had cancer. And I was immensely relieved to discover I didn't. After that, it was a piece of cake to have the Novasure done. I didn't want to give my body any help in deciding later it should develop cancer; I nipped it in the bud.

Oh, and I did not have Endometriosis. My mom and sister have it; my OB/GYN actually did an entire check of my female organs while she was in there doing the Novasure (I have pictures). All of my female organs were fine and healthy with absolutely no sign of Endometriosis. Although that probably can be the case for some, it wasn't for me.

I had the biopsy done in the doctor's office ... It was called a colposcopy (http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/cevicalconditions/a/colp.... I'm a complete wimp, so she did prescribe some Valium to help me relax and had me take some Advil before I came in. I rested the remainder of the day, but was fine after that. If your husband can't take you, absolutely call Wild Woman ... She'll be a comfort to have there with you.

I haven't had that done, but I will tell you to talk to the doctor about your nausea with the anesthesia. Explain in detail your reaction to it. They can give you something before the anesthesia that will help calm your stomach. I've had to do that before and it works wonders!

Good luck and hugs!

I have had a biopsy done and it was not painful at all. I believe she dilated the mouth of the uterus and inserted a long instrument that plucks a little piece of skin out of the lining. It was because I had bad cells in my pap smear. I think your symptoms sound more like endometriosis, where the lining not only grows too thick but sometimes outside of the uterus. I think an ablation is done for that nowadays: http://women.webmd.com/endometrial-ablation-16200
I would call the nurses at the doctor's office instead of worrying.
