My son is 2.5 weeks old and terrible at taking naps! He sleeps great at night and wakes up once or twice to nurse but seems unable to sleep soundly during the day. He wakes up every five or ten minutes when he is napping. He is in a bassinet right next to our bed during the day and at night and falls asleep on his own. Noise, quiet, white noise, and lullabies have no impact so any advice would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

He is newly out of your tummy, and is used to constant motion and noise during the day. Try a vibrating bouncy seat, a baby swing (designed for newborns - if he is too upright his head can flop down and it can restrict his breathing) - or better yet, put him in a wrap (moby wrap, maya wrap...) and carry him around with you - your warmth, your voice, your heartbeat, and your smell along with the motion he is used to will soothe him right to sleep! I found with my babies that if I wore them for about 20 minutes after they fell asleep they would be REALLY crashed out, and then I could untie my wrap and lay them in their cradle with it and they would stay asleep for a while.

My son did the exact same thing. He didn't start napping until about 5 months old. But he slept through the night so I counted that as a blessing. Try darkening his room and putting a fan (or other noise) in there for background noise. Good luck!!

He is so young.... an infant does not even have control over their appendages.... it is called a "startle reflex".... and they startle themselves awake... just when their legs/arms jerk around.
It can't be helpd.

You could try and swaddle him, or use a "sleep sack." Amazon has those and you can see it there.

But this is the usual.
They don't even have a regular pattern yet... and just need to be fed on-demand.

When you say he 'wakes up every 5 or 10 minutes" .... do you mean he wakes up crying/screaming???? OR is he just moving around and stirring???? If he is just moving around and stirring... let him be. Babies don't sleep still as a 'statue' many times. They stir... just as adults sometimes do. BUT if he is awake awake and crying or screaming... then go to him.

But again, he is so young, and this is what they do.

An infant... will get 'tired' about 2 hours max, after 'awake' time.
Try putting him down, before he gets over-tired....

all the best,
Susan

my second was like this. If I put her in her bassinet during the day she would not nap. But then I realized she loved sleeping in something that had motion like the swing or bouncy chair that vibrated. So you should try that. And really don't worry about starting bad habits your baby is way too young for that. My daughter slept in her swing for naps until she was like 5 months old. Then when I started putting her in her crib she was fine. No issues at all. I think because I waited until she was older she didn't need that motion anymore. So try that.
