If you are breastfeeding it is too much foremilk http://www.breastfeedingbasics.com/html/oversupply.shtml
My eaight month old has been having 4 to 6 light green bowel movements a day for the last week. Sometimes they are pretty solid and sometimes they are a little darker and are diahhrea. And there is no blood in stoolI was told by her ped to do every other feeding with pedialyte and us teh BRAT diet. I have been doing that since monday and it hasn't changed. She is not running a fever and is drinking and eating normally. I thought it might be from teething but its been a week since it started. No new foods have been given to her before it started. And she continues to have wet diapers. What could this be? How long does diarhhea usually last?

If you breastfeed, green poop is an indication of too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. If you don't breastfeed, I'm kind of clueless. My son was like this until I got him used to drinking water from a sippy cup. He would drink only foremilk because he was using me to hydrate. He wouldn't really drain my breasts well; just drink the watery foremilk from each side. Then, if he was still hungry, he'd go back and drink the hindmilk. Once I got him used to drinking water, he breastfeeds completely on one side and then goes to the other side, and his poop went back to yellow. Until he really got into eating food, of course. Beware the blueberry diapers!!
When I had my son I had the same question... the color of their poop changes as they grow is what I was told by his Pediatrician.
Hi
Light green probably means something is irritating her liver&/or gall bladder.
So take a look at what you are feeding her. Are you nursing- then look at what you are eating. We have used Apple Cider- the pectin in it helps the liver/gb- and locally Zieglers organic apple cider is what we use.
Check WestonPrice for the best food recommendations. I think there is a chapter in Tampa.
She is very young for this, and if I had to guess I'd say she's on formula?
WestonPrice will help with that.
Best, k
What's wrong with your doctor? They should be running tests to see what is wrong. It could be anything causing the green stool. I would get a second opinion if it were me.
My oldest son had green, nasty diarrhea for several weeks when we tried him on Carnation's formula. After we switched him to Wal-Mart's brand, he had normal bowel movements again. Maybe it's the formula. Or if you are breastfeeding, it could be something you are eating.
Too much foremilk could be the problem if you are breastfeeding. This can happen especially if your baby is increasing solid food intake and is using the breastmilk to hydrate. Otherwise, I say it is either a virus or teething or a combination thereof...my daughters would have teething episodes that would last for a couple of weeks, not days, so teething could definitely be an issue. Usually, however, you would see a change in eating habits due to the pain. Viruses can also last 10-14 days, so that is also a strong possibility.
If there is no fever associated with it and your baby is not vomitting, is eating normally, etc., I would not be too concerned. However, if you have questions about it, do not hesitate to contact your pediatrician again. They may decide to have you come in to check your baby out and make sure there is not something else going on.
Hello E. M,
I agree with DanaW
Your baby have virus in her body system, it mean upset stomach and gas. green stool is normal for short time. it will go away.
Important give her plenty of fluid, peialyte, gatorale, ginger ale soda, which prevent from hydration. 8 months old can drink these. if she has alot of dirrehea. Do not give her formula and juices because it cause worst. until dirrehea stopped. BRAT diet is good idea.
My son had though same thing, it took 3 weeks. he is now healthy and happy.
It sounds like she has a virus that is causing it. Unfortunately, viruses have no cure, so they have to run their course.
Since it's sometimes runnier in nature, the liquids (pedialyte in particular) are going to be critical.
Of course, few of us have a medical background, so you're doing the best thing by being in touch with your Pediatrician. Having 2 young kids, myself, my guess based upon their experiences is that it's just a longer-acting virus that will need a little more time to pass through her system.
Good luck!
