Our daycare announced that two kids (not in my son’s class) each have confirmed lice. Any idea if fairy tales for lice prevention works? Neither boy has had head lice. I understand treatment is a chore. Thanks. F. B.

What can I do next?

Just buy the Nit-Free Terminator Lice comb from Amazon. It’s about $10. Run the comb through your son’s hair every day to every other day starting at the roots and working down the length of the hair. This will prevent any nits from sticking. I’ve used Fairy Tales before, but frankly only after we’ve had an issue. SO, not sure how well it works to prevent it in the first place.

Some people swear by mayo on the head in a shower cap.
It won't hurt anything to try it.
Wash up hats/coats clothing that came home from school.
Make sure the kids all know not to share hats, combs, brushes, etc with anyone.
Start daily hair inspections looking for lice or nits.
Hopefully there won't be anything but the sooner you find if there is a problem the quicker you can deal with it.
Our son has always had a brush cut.
He's never had a problem but if he had - the shorter hair is easier to deal with.

Same as Tracy. Have used Fairy Tales after I got rid of the lice and nits, as a preventive. I am not sure if it really prevents lice, or if the lice outbreak at the school was already over by the time my daughter went back to school and started applying this product. A fellow mom swore by tea tree oil, she would put some drops in her son's long, curly hair, and according to her, had avoided tons of lice outbreaks throughout his years in elementary school. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but maybe you can Google it.

Those products do not work. They are shams to get your money. Do some research on the internet and check your kids hair frequently.

Use it everyday preventatively. Seems to work. Been using it for 3 years.

Shave his head? I don't know of a prevention that works. My daughter's class in 1st grade had lice off and on ALL YEAR. She caught it 3x at school last year. It really sucked. She has long hair and she loves to hug. It didn't matter to her that I told her not to, she just couldn't help herself! Some parents like to use tea tree oil shampoo or tea tree oil. They say it works. I know we bought it and used it! Keep your child's hair up if it's long. You can run a lice comb through and check his hair every couple days to get nits out before they hatch. That is probably the best prevention.
