Lice issue...recommendations

We found lice in our daughters head on June 1. Since then we've done 4 RID treatments. Are there other alternatives out there? I read about olive oil and mayo, but not sure if they really work. It gets better with each treatment, but the process seems never ending. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Been there done that. The only thing that really works is getting rid of all the nits after you've killed the live lice with the treatments. (I have used Rid, and also after that didn't work twice, I ordered a chemical-free shampoo from www.Qbased.com. It's Q-based healthcare. It worked better for us than the Rid, but it takes a few days for it to arrive.)

Anyhow, you need to make sure that after you do the treatment, you spend every night for several days going through the hair for nits and picking them out and throwing them away. (The combs don't work as they are too big. You actually have to pull the nit off the hair shaft. It's very time consuming and tiring.) Nits aren't killed by the shampoo. Get your glasses out and use a desk light right by your daughter's head to really see what you're doing. They are very hard to see. Also, every day that you find nits, you need to wash your daughter's bedding in HOT water. And you need to get a spray (chemical or not) and spray your furniture. Nits and lice can live on bedding and furniture. Also, did you bag up all her stuffed animals in plastic bags? You need to do that, and let them sit for a month. (they say two weeks but do a month) Nits hatch and look for a live body. If they are on the stuffed animals and they hatch and don't find a human, they will die. That's why they tell you to bag the stuffed animals, and anything else in her room that could have a nit on it. (dolls, soft toys, etc.)

Anyhow, you could try the olive oil and mayo or other things like that, but in the end it's getting rid of all the nits in her hair and in your house that actually gets rid of the problem. It's a pain isn't it!!!?? I have two daughters and we've been through lice three times in their lives (one is 20, the other is 10). E-mail me if you have questions. I feel for you! We just went through this a year ago when they went through our school.

I just read the other day that shampoo mixed with tea tree oil is supposed to work. I never used it, but thought I'd put it out there for you.

Consider Melaleuca Oil. It's the rarest and purest grade of Tea Trea Oil.

Take a look at www.melaleuca.com. They don't market a product specifically for lice but many of their products can be combined to create what you need. Example: We use Sol U Mel and Melaleuca Oil to create an insect repellent safe enough for our entire family.

I'm a preferred customer and I pay the PC price. If you'd like to shop online at the same price, let me know.

When I worked for Head Start a girl got lice and her mother took a jar of Mayo (NOT Miracle Whip), put it all over there daughters head put a plastic bags over the hair and left it on for like 4 hours. She combed her hair and then washed it all out and the mom said they were gone. I think she may have used beer with the first washing to help get out all the stinky mayo. They checked her at school and she was clean.

I know you have to vaccuum the bed. Put her pillows and all her stuffed toys in garbage bags. (If you have some of those vacuum storage bags those are best. Because they seal tight and can hold a lot.) Can't remember if it is 2 weeks they have to sit in the bags. I would wash all her clothes, vaccuum all the carpets. Clean... Clean ... Clean...
You have to make sure all the nits are off her head. Use a tweezer if necessary.

Good Luck, I hope this really works...I was told it does...

I agree with the mom that talks about getting all the nits, that is the most important part. Pulling out the vacuum and using it on the matress and under the bed helps too! I prefer the olive oil to rid, it just doesnt ruin everyones scalp!

Oh ugh! As a mom and school RN, i have a few rec's. One, find out WHERE they came from, pre-school, daycare, etc..get that under control. Because if she is being exposed to them over and over she will continue to have them. Two, the nits have to be pulled off the hair shaft. You have to comb/pull them out to get rid of all of it. Three, some do say the mayo works as with olive oil, but again, see number one, have to find the source. And, if you have bugs and not just nits you have a real problem source somewhere, got to find it. Bugs are a bigger problem than nits. They should be sluggish after treatments. I feel for you. Make sure you are treating bedding, etc, too and that none of you have it, too. It is so easy to pass to one another and parents assume that they couldnt have it, and many times they picked it up on a trip, etc..Oh, the joys of parenthood! Goodluck!
