Lice! Advice? - Omaha,NE

I'm so grossed out! My daughter had a sleepover this past weekend, and one of the girls ended up having lice. We didn't find out until Tuesday morning. It's also going around my daughter's summer care program. So we checked her head and found two live lice. We treated with RID and combed through her hair and everything. Home free, right? Wrong. I took both our girls to their care providers today and had to take them home. There was white stuff all over their hair. What looked to me like residue from the shampoo that was hard to rinse out is supposedly nits. Gross. I can retreat, which I will. But I was curious if anyone has used Lice Doctors? It's expensive, but I was wondering about if they were legit or not? They use olive oil to treat and then a follow up plan we have to do at home for three weeks over olive oil in the hair overnight. I read oil doesn't work, but perhaps you can't believe everything you read online :) Anyway, advice is helpful please, or any info about Lice Doctors. Thanks, Moms!

What can I do next?

I can totally sympathize! I had a go round with lice when I had a home daycare - my daughter brought it back with her from camp. We found out when we took her for a hair cut.

I did get rid of it in one day (longest day of my life, though). Here is what I did:

I treated everyone (even myself and my husband) with real mayonnaise (NOT miracle whip) and put shower caps on our heads to let it "set". While that was "cooking" on our heads, I vacuumed EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE HOUSE. Hard floors, too. Every piece of bedding and all pillow were washed in hot water. Rugs, too. All stuffed animals were bagged and put out in the shed for 30 days. All plastic toys were rinsed in bleach/water mix. I vacuumed both vehicles and sprayed them with lice killer (this is the only place I used chemicals). Make sure that when you vacuum, you take all the bags (or empty the canister) outside and throw them in the outside garbage. When I took the shower caps off all of us, I went through everyone's head with a nit comb. I spent no less than an hour on each person's head (the kids watched movies while I did this). The most important part is this step, so get clips to move sections of hair aside to work on one piece at a time.

The whole process cost me less than 30 dollars, but did take one entire day (about 15 hours start to finish). I was completely lice free at the end and although it was one of the worst days of my life, it would have been worse to do a "not so good" job and then have to do it all over again a few days later.

Good luck!

ETA: Forgot to add - throw out every comb, brush and hair clip (you could probably clean if you wanted - I just threw them and replaced). Also, wash jackets, hats ANYTHING your heads come into contact with as well.

Boys are easier with this - you can give them brush cuts and way less hair means it's a lot easier to comb through.
You can't do that with girls!
You're going to have to do a lot of nit picking - combing through the hair over and over and keep washing.
It'll take time but eventually you'll get through this!

I've never used an outside help to get rid of lice...

I just used a standard OTC lice treatment then thoroughly went through everyone's hair......

The thing we did was just to go through their hair with a magnifying glass, if necessary, and and find every single nit..... pull that gently out of the hair with your fingernails.

I never found that the nit combs really did that much good....

Yes, it can take several hours to go through everyone's hair, but that is really the only thorough way to do it.

(I have 3 girls, and yes, we ended up with lice several times......)

The treatment only kills living bugs, not the nits. For nits you have to comb. Every single day, until you don't find any more signs.

Comb comb comb.

Buy a terminator comb, and please do not listen to those using flea shampoos.

Please research the chemicals you are using before doing so. Your skin absorbs all chemicals and you are putting it on their heads.

RID is nnot effective the lice are immune to it.

Use one of the professional lice companies. So worth it! Plus, your kid can go back to school/daycare/wherever immediately after their stamp of approval. They also guarantee their work.

MY boys had Lice once. I treated with the shampoo, changed their bedding, combed through with the nit comb every day for a week, and treated again with the shampoo. The lice were gone for good.
