Hi Moms,

My3 y/o daughter was around another girl who I just found out has head lice. She was only around her for about an hour, but she was sitting very close to her while they played. After we left her mother said she found 3 live ones in her hair. Should I be concerned? My daughter has very long hair and I know it would be horrible if she caught this. I have washed her hair 3 times with 3 different shampoo's. LOL. What should I do?

What can I do next?

I haven't read everyone's response so if I am repeating I am sorry. First all you said she was by her but you haven't found anything in her hair so please don't use the chemicals yet. Go buy some tea tree oil and put that in her shampoo. This will keep the lice away. They can't stand it and it repels them.

You can put olive oil on her with shower cap to smoother any possible live ones...

I would be afraid to... it is no fun!

I would treat her hair with mayo (the real stuff, not Mircle Whip) and a lice comb, wash in the hottest water you can everything that has touched her head, and vacuum everything really well (make sure that you put the vacuum out in the shed for a few days after that). She may not have it, but it will make you feel better, decrease the chance that she gets/spreads it, and mayo is a really good hair treatment anyways :)

I know some folks don't believe in the whole mayo thing, but as a mom of 6 kids, I swear by it. The most important thing is using the lice comb correctly - do very small sections at a time, start at the scalp and work down slowly, and be very very thorough. Should take you about 2 hrs to do a long haired child. I always put a stool in the living room, popped a movie in, and let them watch the movie while I was combing.

Good luck!

Keeping her hair clean and checking her hair often, usually if your daughter has long hair, they say keep it in rubber bands. Once my daughter started school in pre-K, I had to constantly check her hair, if you notice that if they scratch their head more then usually, then check their hair. No borrowing hair brushes, caps or hats, anything that would have contact with the hair.

Walmart sells a robi-comb for abt $25. It is less expensive in the long run than all the shampoos, etc. It zaps with a tiny (can't feel it on your hand) charge. Works immediately aqnd great in long hair. My daughter had hair to her waist!!! Use it daily for 2 weeks to get any new nits. Battery operated. I let all the moms in class use it-when you are through using it, let the mom of the girl use it or she will keep infesting your daughter!! If your daughter gets them bad, you will have to bag up all her stuffed animals for 3 weeks. Wash her sheets daily in hot water and put them in the dryer. This should take care of bedding and no need to buy products unless they get into the mattress. Do it today-they multiple quickly and best to be proactive! Another tip-they told me keep my daughter's hair braided-harder for them to get in!!

Lice are only transmitted by touch. So it their heads did not touch, she is most likely fine.

washing her hair with a lice shampoo is a good start. I would also suggest getting one of the lice combs and combing through her hair just to make sure you don't find anything. I would do this for the next couple of days just in case. Probably you weren't around her long enough but from experience once you have the lice they are very difficulate to get rid of and my daughter caught them from class mates twice last year. Now we make sure that we put her hair back in a pony tail for school she is less likely to have her hair touch someone elses. Picking through the hair for the lice is the biggest pain but you would rather catch it early. If your daughter did end up picking it up I would suggest one of those electronic lice combs... they seemed to work wonders with my daughter. I even used it on her for a couple of weeks after we were pretty sure she was lice free just to make sure..It was 20 dollars and I thought it was worth it.

First of all, it's not horrible. It's just a thing that happens sometimes--no big deal. Call your pediatrician to see what shampoo they recommend, and follow the directions that come with it. You can find info on the internet, too. My daughter had to have a note from her pediatrician before she could go back to day camp, but she didn't miss any camp because the treatment was so fast.

Oh man do I remember these days!! Hopefully they are far behind me! I have 4 kids and they and us got it. Lord have mercy what a nightmare! My oldest daughter had long hair...after treatment and 7 days later..they were still there!
i called my mom in hysterics thinking I was going to have to cut all her hair off. My mom told me to put mayonnaise in everyone's hair (thick) and wear a shower cap and sleep in it overnight. In the morning we moistend it up with a spray bottle of warm water. Then nit combed it. This Finally worked!!! A blessing in disguise my oldest son had really bad cradle cap...had it for years...this also completely cleaned that off too! Good Luck!

Do not bother with over the counter stuff. It doesnt work and costs money that is waisted. You need to go to the places that do it on premises and use the natural stuff. They will take the time to cut out all the lice and treat it with something safer than over the counter.

It went around my daughter's school. My baby has very long, very wavy, very thick hair. We got rid of it for months on end, but there was one girl in her class whose mom refused to deal with the issue, so we got it again... then again before the school forced her to stay home until it was taken care of.

Anyway, the OTC pestacides did not work. We tried that once but I couldn't put the poison on her again. What DID work for everyone at our school was Lice MD. It is available at Walgreens, non-toxic, and it just plain worked. With that said, we still picked every single nit out of her hair and went on searching and searching for months on end until we were quite sure it was all gone.

All stuffed animals were vaccuumed, bedding was boiled. Freaking nightmare.

I sincerely hope you do not have to deal with this. I also hope that that irresponsible mother does not arrange any more playdates until she takes care of her problems.

Hi E.,

I am actually getting ready to open my own lice and nit removal service in Indiana. The one thing I advise against is using a shampoo with harmful chemicals, such as nix or rid. I suggest that you try and find a lice and nit removal service in your area that will come to your home and guarantee that the lice do not return. When I did the research for my business, I looked at businesses all over the U.S. and there were several in Texas. If you are unable to use a service then I suggest using an all natural lice removing shampoo. The most important thing is that you make sure that you remove all nits from her hair! If you don't then you will have a reinfestation within 7 days or so. Make sure that you comb every day for 7 days after treatment and then everyother day for the next 7 days. I hope this info helps!

The good thing is that you found out about this early, and if she has any lice it may just be the live ones. My daughters are going through this now. We did the Nix shampoo, and I have been going through their hair every night to make sure I get all the eggs. I also bought the electric lice comb to check for live lice every day. This is not fun, but I figure this is not the worst thing that could happen to my kids. I am using the tea tree oil shampoo, and conditioner on the whole family. I also washed their bedding and tossed the pillows in the dryer for 5 min.

Do not use any lice shampoo unless you are certain she has them. THis stuff is so toxic that you don't want to do it without having a good reason.

You could use a shampoo with Tree Tea oil which is said to repel grown headlice. It may or may not work, but at least it is not toxic.

Hi E.,

I know you have quite a few answers, but I wanted to second the olive oil treatment. My daughter also has long hair and she was actually allergic to the over the counter shampoo. It burned her scalp.

A nurse told us to smother her head (once I had triple washed the otc shampoo out) in olive oil, plastic wrap it and leave over night.. That did the trick.

I think that mayonaise would be good too. Mayonaise is awesome at all kinds of things, I love it for removing gum stuck to anything....

Be concerned! So hard to get rid of. The good thing is it is summer so your daughter probably isn't in school with a big group of kids passing it back and forth. We fought it for 3months until school was out because my daughter's public school did not send notes home or ANYTHING! Re: if a child had lice. I spent a fortune getting things dry cleaned, washing stuff, spraying things, etc. My one daughter spread them to me and her sister so that meant three sets of bedding to clean, two rooms of stuffed animals, three heads to comb. My scalp is itching just typing this.
What finally worked was the prescription stuff. Horribly toxic and we probably all have brain damage but I really did not care at that point. If she has them, treat and then treat AGAIN one week later. Comb, comb, comb with those little tiny combs. I used to take my daughter out on the driveway in the evenings,I'd throw out a towel and we would sit there and chat and comb. That towel wasn't allowed back in the house unless it went straight to the washing machine.

My friend who had a problem with lice before has given me this recipe -

How to get rid of Head Lice:

Mix together and leave on hair for 45 min. to and hour.
10 drops of each oil -

2oz sweet almond oil

rosemary
eucalyptus
geranium
lavendar

Rinse and can condition if want to and then put tea tree oil in shampoo (enough to smell it - it doesn't take much)

Good luck

I know people who have used Arbonne Intelligence Daily, Self-Adjusting Shampoo with Tea Tree Oil to get rid of lice and keep their kids from getting it.
http://www.arbonnemarketing.com/PK/dl/pk/760_us_eng.pdf

Or you can use tea tree oil (make sure you purchase pure tea tree oil and that there aren't any additives) for lice is to mix some into your shampoo. For every 4 oz. of shampoo, add 2 drops of tea tree oil. Baby shampoo is the best because it is gentle and doesn't really have any additives. You can also add some to your conditioner using the same proportions.

Good Luck!
