Lemon juice...like lemonade? I would avoid on all but rare occasions. Lemons are quite acidic and can easily damage enamel on baby teeth. At that age, I was giving my daughter all sorts of juices, but was diluting with at least 50% water. Juice has little, if any, nutritional value and just isn't necessary in a well balanced diet. In moderation, it ceertainly isn't going to hurt, but I'd avoid it as much as possible.

Hi A.---I have a friend, when having lunch together, gave her 1 year old daughter the lemon from her water to suck on. I say go for it if he likes it.

I am also taking wellness classes, taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition. I have a number of books talking about the nutritional and medicinal properties of different foods. I was really surprised to learn that bananas are recommend FOR constipation. When my husband broke his hand and collar bone and had problems from his pain meds, I gave him bananas and kiwi with a bit of agave nectar and it really helped him resume normal bowel movements. Does your son drink lots of milk/dairy? Dairy is one of the most constipating and allergenic substances in the world. That's because cows milk is designed specifically for baby nows, NOT HUMANS. Please go to www.pcrm.org and put dairy in the search box. Two other sources are www.whynotmilk.com and www.thechinastudy.com. Check it out.

For constipation, be sure you are all eating high fiber foods and drinking lots and lots of water. Reduce and/or elimate processed foods as they contain little fiber. A balance diet of fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes and nuts and seeds will make elimination a breeze. And that's important as the longer that stuff is in the gut, the more toxins and bad stuff the gut reabsorbs. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss the points I've raised. l feel that our medical system does not understand the healing and preventive powers of food and that they are doing a disservice to their patients by not starting there.

Good luck...have fun introducing...and reintroducing new foods to your family's diet. In health, D.

Lemon juice should be fine in moderation and mixed with plenty of water- lemon is a "diurertic" which can cause dehydration. Honestly, toddlers shouldn't be drinking too much juice! Water it all down so that there's a little flavor, but not a lot of sugar.

If he is constipated by bananas, then don't give him too many.

Bananas can be VERY constipating! Limit them (especially if your child has had any cheese that same day), increase whole grains and fiber. make sure your little guy drinks lots of water (I totally agree about limiting juice intake).

The doctors recommend that by 1 year the baby should be eating every thing what we eat. (If its not allergic to him/her). I have a 19 months old girl and i find the same problem with her too...she is constipated after eating bananas. I give her plenty of water to keep constipation at bay. My doctor told to Give her fruits and veggies after just mashing (since she don't have teeth yet) it and without straining it will also help. This won't waste away the fiber in the food which is required for good bowel movements. Add prunes juice or pureed prunes to the baby's diet. Some babies get cramps from prunes or prune juice, but most take it all right.
You can give him lemon juice, just take care that you keep a proper interval between the lemon juice and milk, because there are chances that lemon juice- being acidic, may react with the milk which is already in his stomach. And please do try to avoid giving him lemon juice on empty stomach. Because, as by my experience- my daughter gets cramps in her stomach if i give orange or lemon juice to her empty stomach. And please dilute the lemon juice and give. Dilute it 80% with water at the beginning and then 70%, 60%,50%....so on. This way you can know whether his little tummy can take lemon juice or no.
