Leg Pain - Any Ideas?

I am experiencing leg pain in the outside of my right leg. It begins right below the knee but off to the right side and the pain radiates behind my knee and all of the way down the outside of my right leg and into my ankle and foot. It is causing serious discomfort and pain. I am unable to find a position that is actually comfortable for my leg. I first noticed the pain when I was kneeling, picking up some of my son's toys and the pain went right down into my leg. Eventually it went away after a day. Recently it came back and it is always there. I have to take large doses of advil to keep the pain at bay. I am going to make an appointment with the orthopedic doctor who fixed my de Quervain's syndrome but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone else knows what this could be. It really sucks. I am not a runner, and I do not do any high impact exercise.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input! Turns out, I probably damaged some cartilage somewhere in my knee and the pain radiated outward. I didn't need to go to my orthopedic since it seemed to clear up with rest and icing after 1 week.

did you feel or hear a pop? anything that you DID - or was it ONLY after you were kneeling?

Since you already have an orthopedist and large doses of advil aren't helping - make an appointment. If they can't see you this week - go to your PCP and have them check you out.

I would personally rule out sciatic nerve because the pain does not come from the butt down...but who knows??? I am not a doctor!! Usually radiating or burning pain indicates a pulled muscle or a sprained appendage.

Hope you are feeling better soon!!

Could be sciatica, but usually that starts in the hip and radiates down the thigh and sometimes beyond. Could be I.T. band too. See the ortho but if it takes a while to be seen, try a chiropractor or a good massage therapist (especially one who deals with injuries). A colleague of mine is a massage therapist and did wonders for my husband's IT band. Also ice it, and when it's really numb, stretch gently but thoroughly. Meantime, in case it's partly sciatica, lie on the floor with bent knees and the small of your back flat against the floor (pelvic tilt). Do some pelvic tilt exercises and some crunches. Support your neck/head with your hands but do not pull on your neck - look at the ceiling and be sure there's room enough for an apple under your chin (no chin-to-chest, you know?). Just lift your head and shoulders off the ground - don't do full sit-ups. Do a set of 12, rest 2 minutes, repeat. If you can do this a few times a day to strengthen your abdominal muscles, and if you make an effort to keep your pelvis tilted forward just a little throughout the day, it may help relief this. Even if you don't have sciatica, it's good for your abs!

Try alternating doses of Advil and Aleve (name brands or generics, doesn't matter). They are different medications and do different things. My son is a top runner and this is what the trainers have them do if they are injured. You still have to get checked out but this might buy you some time. You don't want to take these meds long term - really hard on your digestive system and your liver, and there are some more natural things you can do over time (happy to help with that). But for now, just hold on until you are seen by a professional. And don't take any medications for a few hours before your appointment - makes it harder for them to figure out what is going on.

If you want more info, let me know. Feel better!

I don't know what is causing your knee pain, but here are my issues that make my knee pain worse:

1. Too much time on Mamapedia, with my knees bent under me..ouch, ouch, ouch. I cannot get up and walk away from the computer at times.

2. I have had a lot of injuries to both of my knees. My left ACL has been replaced with my own patella tendon. That caused me to hobble on my right leg for a long time and know I have classic old lady knees full of arthritis from those events.

3. Definitely ask for a referral to a PT. You should not be taking such large doses to Motrin/Advil for longer than 3 days to keep said pain at bay. It's very bad on your stomach and is addictive long term.

GL!

My friend had an MRI of her knee for such severe knee pain she could hardly walk. It turned out it was sciatic and resolved on its own. Her pain was different than yours but the radiating pain makes me think it could be sciatic. Feel better.

I just had a knee sprain.
Nothing spectacular happened, it was just aggravated over time.
Can your PCP recommend an orthopedic doc?
That's probably your best bet.
Good luck!

It sounds like you've injured a ligament in your knee. My self, a friend and a brother have had this happen. None of us are athletic. That is why when I twisted my leg a ligament stretched. It was treated with rest and physical therapy to strengthen muscles.

Sounds like Sciatica (see pics online) you ll notice that it's the largest nerve in the body and runs from the hips down into the foot...

you needn't be a runner to have that kind of pain. I am not, but even when I walk a longer distance, say 5 or 7 miles, I will get that ache you describe. What helps me is one, DO stretch your legs and hips. Particularly your hips because when your hips are tight, they tend to tighten around and near the Sciatic nerve , hence send a shooting pain down your leg. there is a pose in Yoga called TADASANA , if you aren't familiar, it's one where you stand straight up and jut your hips forward. This forward motion is what helps your hips turn back in as oppose to outward (you may have seen how some pregnant ladies late in their pregnancy turn their hips outward) well as you can imagine, that strangles (so to speak) the sciatic nerve and causes pain. You can probably see the pose done online.

Anyway, I do this pose all the time , not necessarily with my arms up all the time, but whenever standing, say doing the dishes, etc... I try and not only get my hips more into alignment but also practice pointing your feet forward (many have a tendency to walk out to one side)

I also have foot pain... which for me, if my legs are tight, then my feet also pay the price because the tendons in the feet tighten up...

Bottomline for me, stretching in the morning and at night.. warm baths and at time advil ... but I try and limit it. although, I will take it if the pain persists...
oh and massage...

good luck

You should definitely check out the problem. Sciatica, which I have had, usually from my experience and that of friends' starts at your butt cheek and radiates down your leg, not starting at you knee.
Is there any redness or swelling or is the area hot and sore to the touch behind your knee or anywhere in calf area? I am not a medical professional, and don't want to be an alarmist but something like a blood clot should not be ruled out until it's ruled out. It could likely be a sprain or strain, but definitely get it checked out to be on the safe side.
