Leg Aches

Hi! I'm 11 weeks pregnant and I'm noticing my legs are achy. I sit at a computer most of my day at work. I have found that my legs are so uncomfortable. I put a box under my desk to help prop them up but that only helps a little. Has anyone found something to help w/ achy legs? crossing my legs makes them even worse (which is how I used to sit prior to getting pregnant) I have also noticed that I'm getting some purplish veins on my thighs that were not there before!

What can I do next?

Hi N.,

Congratulations!! I found that when I was pregnant with my son that my legs would cramp up and I found that using a heating pad after I got home from work with my legs elevated a little helped. I've also heard that support hose might help as well.

I hope this helps! Remember to enjoy each and every stage because they grow up way to fast.

Hi N..

Sounds like you need (!deserve!) a *massage* as a Mother's Day gift (hint from me to the hubby :))

Congratulations!

Hi N.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

It seems that now that you are pregnant, the nutrition that was keeping you healthy is now being diverted to your new baby.

I am no expert, but when my legs have bothered me in the past, it was a mineral deficiency. My naturopath also told me that the purplish veins are also from a vitamin deficiency.

I have been taking an amazing all-in-one liquid vitamin and mineral supplement called Vibe. It was formulated by an MD and utilizes a brand new technology. This technology allows the nutrition to reach the cellular level in minutes.
I noticed I felt relief just that fast!

I can send you some free samples if you want to try it.
You can check with your doctor too if you would like. He will see that Vibe just contains the nutrition that we should be getting from our food but just don't these days.

My whole family takes Vibe. We love it.

You cannot get Vibe in a store. It is sold by independent distributors. www.vibeforme.com/smartidea.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

And again Congratulations on your new baby!
That is really awesome!

Blessings,
D.

Sounds like you need to be doing more exercise. I would also talk to your doctor about getting some support hose as a preventative to vericose veins. Pregnancy is a time when many women develop the condition. If you don't stretch your legs and take walks you will end up damaging the valves in your veins. they will get stretched and not be able to return to normal. This is what causes vericose veins. Very painful and very costly. Support hose and walking every day is a great preventative, but talk to your docter asap.

tell your obgyn. I went to a vein specialist and found I had flabitus. It was very painful. my vein at 46 still pops its ugly head at times.

Congrats on your pregnancy! I agree with the other women's recommendations to eat bananas. The potassium can help with leg cramps-- especially if you start getting Charley Horse cramps which can be awful. You could also try increasing your fluid intake. Drinking more water helps your body flush out retained fluid which can make your legs feel sore. Don't be ashamed of your newly acquired spider veins. A lot of women get them, myself included, and they tend to become less noticeable after you give birth. Best wishes! =)

In addition to banannas, molasses is full of Potassium!! Mix some in with oatmeal in the morning, or just take a spoonfull as I do. Definately tell your doctor, though. It sounds like you are getting varicose veins, too.
Good luck and Congrats!

With my first pregnancy I worked in a call center for 9 hour shifts and then the second time around I worked at an insurance office sitting at a computer all day too. I found the only way I felt better and did not ache and slowed the swelling later in the pregnancies, I had to get up and walk around every 30-45 minutes. So about every time I was up to use the bathroom I took a break and walked around for like 5-10 minutes. Get your hubby to rub them for you too. When you are sitting for long periods your blood settles in your legs and feet and during pregnancy your circulation cannot keep up with the extra amount of blood you develop...So you just have to get up and move or try stretching them. Good luck, I am 5 weeks along with my third and already am experiencing the achiness.

When I was pregnant the first time, I also got horrible leg pains. The only thing that helped was walking. I would eat something at my desk and use lunch time to walk for 30 minutes. I would take a 10 - 15 minute walk in the morning and another in the afternoon. Worked wonders!

I have major leg issues and I'm due any second now. What helps me IMMENSELY is eating 2 bananas a day and I wear compression socks. That helps with circulation. Also do a lot of leg stretches throughout the day and walk around. Keep those gams elevated when you can. I'm telling you that the bananas will help alot. I eat them religiously :-) Good luck!

Hi,

Congratulations, in addition to all this great advise I would like to add that you should keep your legs moving under your desk. Elevation is good but keep them active move them around a bit, it helps me.

definitely put your feet up...when you get home from work put your feet up on the side of your bed, a sofa, or the wall and breath for about 1 minute, after a week or so if it feels good try to increase for 2 minutes, and so on working up to about 5 minutes (don't overdue it at first)...
also, how much exercise do you get every day? i'm sure you're beyond tired after working, however it will increase your energy to take a walk either before you get home or maybe after dinner in the early evening when it's cooled off and beautiful.
take care of yourself!

It all sounds pretty normal to me! My first pregnancy my spider veins and vericose veins appeared, and I started with the cramping and tight feelings.
I found taking a prenatal and a magnesium tablet, and tums every night for clcium worked wonders. I also started walking every day and stretching my calves frequently. I helped me a lot.

When ever my legs would ache , I would take some calcium with magnesium vitamins and it would help. My girl friend who had a lot of charlie horses during her pregnancy was told by her doc to eat a banana a day, and it actually helped!! Good luck--N.

Well, I've never had the veins in my pregnancies and so I don't know if it's related to your aches or not, but here's what I know...

Your blood volume is increasing up to 40% and your calves actually pump to some degree (like the heart) in order for the blood to be sent back up the body. Stretch your calves throughout your pregancy to avoid charlie horses and plantar fasciitis. Also, when sitting in your car or at your desk, get a towel (or Boppie makes special pillows) that elevates your bottom allowing your knees to be lower than your hips. Experiment with the position until you can see a slight slant of your thighs making your knees lower than your hips. This is key in good back posture which might also help your legs. You cannot sit all day. You have to walk and stretch. Everyone knows a pregnant woman pees alot so use that as your excuse to get up and walk every half hour.

Good luck (wish me luck, too. I'm two weeks over due tomorrow!)
