I still have to 'do' the L on my Left Hand once in a while to get it Straight :-) LOL Sorry Dont have a "real" answer for you tho it just made me giggle at myself
When did your child master left and right? What do you think is within normal age range?

My oldest daughter and my 2 sons can do left and right. My 13 yo daughter and I cannot. By the time they were 4ish they were pretty good at it.
I will give people directions while I am in the car and say go left here and point right. THen they get all upset with me when they go the wrong way.
Seriously I cannot do left and right and I am 45. I hold up my hands to make the L in front of my eyes to know which is my left.
I'm not sure how old she was when she first seemed to know the difference, but my daughter is almost 5 and she's done pretty good with it. She can't react quickly to you saying "left" or "right", she has to think about it. So I wouldn't necessarily say she's mastered it just yet.
My grandson, now 5, has had it for a couple of months.
Like XINE, I never did get it totally sorted out. I have to mentally picture which hand I write with, and go from there. When I approach four-way stops, I do this ahead of time so I won't hold up a driver approaching from the left. Dyslexia rules!
My 30 year old daughter, a smart, successful mother of two, still needs to think about it!
We started talking about left/right when my daughter was two and she is three now and does ok. She likes to ask which is which and I use it when giving her directions but don't expect mastery. It'll stick when it does but exposure is nice.
As for normal, who knows? I remember using a freckle on the back of my right hand as my check to be sure. Didn't learn the cool L with the left index finger and thumb thing until I was an adult. And I do all right.
if kids have issues with body awareness, dyslexia or crossing their mid-line they may never get it. I have a 10 year old who is like Peg and XINE. You learn to accomodate
Kindergarten. So....5.
My son is 4, he knows it.
D., I have an at-home preschool and each day, the children, ages 2-5, say the Pledge of Allegiance, putting their right hand over their heart. When they set the table for lunch, I have them put the spoon on the right side of the plate, the fork on the left side of the plate. When we cross the street to go to the park, we hold our hands out to the side when we say, "Are there any cars on the right? On the left?" It is also good when you are driving to ask your child "Which way do we turn?" or "Which way is left?" When I did this with my own children, I would usually put my hand up and point to the left or right and say the word. Also, when we put on our shoes, I say, "right shoe on the right foot first..." It just becomes part of the day and they learn so much more quickly when they can apply left and right to a real part of their day. Have fun! B.
Around 3 is when they usually show a preference. My son is a lefty and he was closer to 3 1/2.
My kids were all about 2 years old when they mastered it. Everyone is different. My mom who is 63 STILL yell, "Turn right!" So we go right and she keeps screaming like we are going in the wrong direction. She cannot get left vs. right to save her life. LOL
