I was wondering if anyone knew of any web sites that offer learning activities for kid's? I have a step son that goes to year round school and I am trying to find some sort of worksheets he can work on while he stays with us and is not in school. I was looking for some sort of worksheet's with math problems, spelling words, etc. Something to keep his mind fresh in between school. We do not want him to come and stay with us and spend his whole time in front of the t.v.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!!!

Hi K.,

If you have a 1/2-price bookstore close stop by and you can pick up some inexpensive workbooks in their home school section. They sometimes have textbooks that are not too expensive and they are usually for the upper grades. You can buy him a tablet and he can copy the problems out of the book.

For spelling words the best thing to use is a dictionary. Have him copy a page or two including the definitions. Then you can quiz him on the words. Have him make up a story or maybe makeup a sentence or two using the word. Or you could give him a copy of his favorite food and have him lookup the ingredients and use them as spelling words.

Hope this helps have a great week and good luck!

http://www.summerbrains.com/index.html

That is the site for the summer curriculum that we did with our kids this summer--they love it and love to play their on line games.

Also, www.kidzone.ws was recommended by my son's teacher. I use a lot of their tracing pages, etc. They have their stuff grouped by age/grade and subject.

I keep shortcuts for both on my desktop so the kids know they can click there and play without any problems from Mom :^)

Hi K.,
Another idea- have him pick a place that intrests him and while he is w/ you do research about it- look it up on the computer, get library books, make the native foods- just a little bit each day.
We do this w/ our kids during the summer and it works great! We have also done baseball (w/ a trip to the muesum at The Ballpark), dinosaurs (w/ a trip to the Nautural History Museum) and weather.

Have fun!

Hi K.,

I don't know if you've thought about it much, but if you want to stray away from the typical worksheet there are some great educational toys at: www.getkidtoys.com
If you click on products and go to your step son's age, you'll see and get to read about some of the products. You can have him make a story about his visit or something of interest. You can have him work on grammar with an "Adventures in Grammar" set. There are "Think it through" science and advanced math sets. For language practice there's the "word flip" french and spanish set. There's a quick thinking "Wiz Kids" game that would be fun to play together. Plus the "Unjumble" spelling game. This might make it a little more appealing for him than just worksheets. Plus, it really gives you and your husband an opportunity to spend time with him as he plays these learning games, but has fun doing it. I think you'll give him some great memories of his visits with you, but you'll also give him some learning time in a fun way. Last but not least, have you tried www.ed.gov It's the government website with many resources for parents, teachers, and students. Good luck to you and have fun with him!

Sincerly,
E.
