Learner's Permit in TX, Can 15 y.o. Drive While Out of State (W/ Parent)?

My 15 y.o. dd is about to get her learner's permit in TX. She's passed the driver's ed test to get the initial permit. We're going out of town for a wedding in NE. Can she drive on her learner's permit w/ a parent, even when we're out of state?

Added later: We live in a high-traffic area around Dallas, and out in the country there would be a lot less traffic for her to deal with.

What can I do next?

i would honestly just check with the other states to see if they would honor it. other wise i say yes let her do it despite what all these other people are saying. i know 80% of the state of texas starts their children off learning to drive early. some as young as 10. so i am sure she actually knows how to drive. just drive carefull, go easy on her, have a adult awake at all times just in case of questions, and NO NO NO BACK SEAT DRIVING. that is what made me nervous and some what scared right away.

You need to check with the Department of Motor Vehicles in NE and any other state thru which you travel. Each state has their own motor vehicle laws. If she can drive in TX with a learners permit the police in another state may honor that but you cannot be sure.

You also need to check with your insurance company. If another state does not honor her learner's permit and she has an accident will they cover the accident?

Hi there. I was 15 and received my actual license while I lived in New Mexico while I went to school out there. When I would return home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and so forth my license was only excepted as a permit in the state of Ohio and then I had to follow Ohio's rules which was having an adult in the vehicle while I drove until I was 16. But while in NM I was able to drive with no one b/c I had my actual license.

I would check into the local state laws that you are going to. Oh ya, also when I would visit my dad in Cali I also had to have a driver with me b/c Cali didn't acknowledge my license either.

You would have to check with the laws of your state and the one you are visiting. But I'm in agreement with Adansmama, why would you want a 15 year-old to drive in an unfamiliar state? There is plenty of time for her to learn to drive on roads that you both are familiar with around home.

There was a car crash here recently where a 15 year-old with a permit was driving in an unfamiliar city, and bad weather, and the entire family was killed.

of course you would want to check the laws in that state...but i just have to say, does a 15 year old who is LEARNING to drive, really need to drive while on a family trip out of state? is it really necessary? it just seems to me to be asking for trouble. it's a risk putting any new driver behind the wheel of a car. you want to put one there who has barely driven, while out of state and away from home...driving is not a game or a god-given right...it's a responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. call me old fashioned, just my opinion....i think as the parent you should be the responsible party and say, let's practice driving in the relative safety of home. why take more risk than you need to?
