Ooh, how about 'Trendy' ? And then, let her wear her favorite things. They sound pretty trendy.... :)
My 3rd grader has a vocabulary parade this Wednesday and was nice enough to let me know this morning she needs to come up with a word and tailor a costume for the parade. I thought I would ask the creative ladies here because all I have come up with so far is existential and dress her up like a hero. Havent run that idea by her because she is in her room having a ten year old moment.
I'm thinking she will shoot it down as she is into pink, zebra prink, 80's fashion and what not (as most of her school mates seem to be as well). We will be brainstorming when she is done with her tif.
The paper she was supposed to bring home last week explained that this is a pretty common activity in school across the US to celebrate our wonderful language.
Has anyone done this and come up with some good ideas? I'm somewhat crafty-but not so creative.
Oh-sorry I neglected to mention that it seems they can pick any word. There was a lost of '150 juicy vocabulary words to spark costume ideas', but they are encouraged to PLAN-and think of an original word that would have an interesting costume design.
I agree this is fun-but she gave me little time to plan and I'm not coming up with many ideas for her. I like Monarch-I'll add that to my list of ideas to run by her.
LOL. I'm honestly surprised that I didn't get slammed. THIS CHILD!! Since our schools were "clustered" there seems to be a competition to get moms attention/get mom to volunteer. I truly appreciate the ideas. If i left this up to her completely it would not get done and it would be mom's fault!!!!

Given the way she handled this assignment I'd probably make her go as "procrastinate" :)
Use poster board to make a giant sandwich board clock or timer either showing 11:00 (the eleventh hour) or 60seconds (the last minute). And down her arms and legs you can pin to-do items (including this assignment)
How about "monarch" and dress her like a queen AND a butterfly?
Athlete-dressed in sports uniform/shirt/jersey
Haphazard-dressed all funky/mismatched clothes
Parentheses-If she has any shirt with words on it-attach cut out black felt and/or use fabric paint
first off haven't heard of this yet, but I'm glad I know about it now incase I ever have to do it.
Why had no one bashed you yet that she needs to do this all herself?
I'm still a little bruised from getting reamed up one side and down the other for wanting to support my 7 yo w a project. i'll live.
I love the procrastination costume that is Epic!
I just searched on pinterest and Got LOTS of super ideas. with pictures!
hypochondriac, formidable, glamourous, accessories
Scholar. Go as herself.
I think there are some good suggestions here. The trick is not to spend much money, and absolutely to make it something she can do almost entirely herself. She procrastinated, and the entire project cannot fall to you to bail her out! So I'd have her go through the dress-up pile or the linen closet and see what inspires her. (Look at what you have that's cheap - bandaids, cotton balls, a couple of sponges that could be cut into squares and glued on -- use "antiseptic" or "ethereal" or "absorbent" as the word.) Then she can learn to use a thesaurus and find a fancy word for whatever she feels inspired to be!
That said, a simple sweatshirt & sweatpants set in any color, and some felt from the craft store can be cut into shapes with no sewing necessary! So, throw the whole thing (or most of it) back on her, and if she complains, let her know more could have been done had she given you the assignment information prior to the weekend!
Scale it back - it's not Halloween with weeks to prepare - it's about vocabulary and learning the word! And, for practical purposes, make it a word she might actually use - I think existential is a little heavy-handed.
Decadent and cover her shirt with chocolate candy wrappers. She could also wear coco butter lotion and smell like chocolate.
Centurion and dress as an old woman.
Studious
Book, ponytail, glasses, knee socks, plaid skirt.
Easy peasy. And appropriate!
Faux and she can wear her pink zebra from head to toe.
Most of these types of thing have a theme. Did she bring her list of vocabulary words to choose from? Is it this month's words? The whole years words? Any word in the world? It makes a difference in the word you choose as your starting point. No use making her a super hero if the vocab words are on the constitution etc....
Pink- Feminine/femininity, blush, iridescence, or dress her in all pink with bows and a baby blanket/teddy bear and she can go as a baby girl "archetype" if you want to be a little creative.
Zebra print- safari, expedition, zoology
'80's- Nostalgic, evocative, reminiscent
We do this in 1st grade. A list of words are sent home and children use any of the words and dress up.
Now I'm drawing a blank but this is a fun activity!!
