I was constipated and gassy the first part of my pregnancy.

I started practicing food combining and eating a lot of raw fruits and veggies (i mean a lot) and the constipation and gas went away! As a snack I ate frozen bananas blended with coconut water and walnuts (my fav). For dinner I ate veggies and meat or veggies and a starch.

Hth!!

As a rule, I would never take any kind of laxitive. They soften your stool AND your ability to hold it later. I would recommend increasing your fiber intake. This is best (most naturally) done with high fiber foods such as beans, veggies, fruits (fresh or dried) and fruit juices. As a second option, when pregnant I would chew one or two Benefiber tablets. The iron in your vitamins can cause pregnancy constipation.

I would recommend drinking lots of water and adding more fiber to your diet. However, if your looking for a laxitive, you can use suppositories. You may also want to try some mineral oil.

Metamucil, milk of magnesia, increase fiber and water, coffee (one cup a day does it for me), colace (a stool softener), prunes, dried fruit, fruit juice (with pulp adds more fiber)--avoid white potatoes, rice, apples and carrots.

My OB had me take Citrucel tablets once a day toward the end of my first pregnancy when I started having trouble with constipation. It did help a little but I also found that drinking a large glass of apple or grape juice had a laxative effect for me.

Metamucil or Benefiber and plenty of water. Hot liquids can help as well such as hot decaf tea or hot lemonade or just plain hot water. You might also try high fiber cereals such as Wheaties or Frosted <Mini Wheats and dried fruits such as prunes. Be careful with dried fruits though, because they are high in sugar and the recommended serving seems small. You have to remember that they are dried and are reduced in size significantly. You can also add beans and brown rice to your diet for fiber.

I always have luck with dried fruit. Dried apricots are yummy and work really well for me, but prunes will work too. Even a bunch of raisins can get things moving. Good luck!

I was told to take Collace if I ever needed to. It is expensive compared to other brands though. I recently heard that the new Senokot tabs are also safe during pregnancy. I just tried to increase OJ or other foods that helped.
