Hi everyone!!
I have an almost 4 year boy (july) who does not like to go to bed at a decent time. We put him to bed at 8-8:30 and he keeps coming in to our room and gets chased back until after 10-11PM. Last night he didnt go to sleep until after mdnight!!!! It is really wearing on him. He is a tall, lean little guy who is not a big eater and he needs his sleep so we can get some weight on him. I want to break him of this bad habit.... when fall comes, he will be going to early AM preschool and if doesnt get a decent amount of sleep he will be a bear!!!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Is he still taking naps? If so, that needs to be cut out. One of my sons (who is five and going to kindergarten in the fall) is a night owl. We put him to bed at 8:30 and he is still up sometimes at 9:30 or later. This past year I put him in P.M. preschool because he easily sleeps until 8:30a.m. Does your little guy sleep in? I think when fall comes with the consistency of waking up earlier and then going to bed the same time he will get used to falling asleep earlier. Start putting him to bed earlier and waking him at the time for preschool two weeks prior (in a perfect world) to starting school. This helps getting them adjusted.

Hi D.,
With the sun staying up later now it will be harder to get the restlessness out of your son but adjusting his bed time routine will help. Is the rest of the "house put to bed" too. Sometimes bringing the night in by turning out all the lights and have other lights on dimmers that still need to on helps. Bath book bed is a good routine warmer weather.
Summertime means staying up later and sleeping in too. Kids in general need about 10-14 hours of sleep in a 24 period. I have 5 who each have little different sleep needs...my 7 year old will take a nap on the weekends my almost 10 year old will stay up late and sleep in my 6 year old needs to go to bed by 8ish or is a cranky beast and depending what is on the eldest mind she won't fall asleep until after 10. So every kid is differnt and yes my kids get up, dressed and feed breakfast by 7:30 am it is rough the first few weeks back to school but we adjust. Hope this helps.

Have you ever seen the show Super Nanny on ABC. She has had to deal with problems like this. Check out the website www.supernanny.com . they have advice for different problems. I think some of her advice is good.
