Late Period - Boulder,CO

So a little background to begin with. I am a mom to a 20 month old. I have had three pretty regular periods after I weaned her (first period after baby's birth was August 1). Now I am 6 days late (like I said I am usually really regular, every 28 days). On Saturday I took a pregnancy test and it came back negative. My husband and I are doing nothing to prevent a pregnancy and will rejoice when we are blessed with another baby, but I'm not sure what's going on right now. My husband suggested my body could still be recovery from everything and getting back to normal. I guess that is possible, but I was wondering how long did it take for other moms to get a regular cycle back and has this happened to others out there? Thanks for any input.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for sharing your stories and such. It really does a lot to keep a mom sane. Unfortunatlly we are not pregnant this time; chalk it up to hormones still adjusting I suppose. I started six days late and we'll see what happens next month. Thanks again.

Oh man, you're lucky! I got my period back just months after my kids were born. Anyway, I remember that soon after my period came back, I had one that was late. I was so freaked out because I think the baby was only 5 months old. I was wondering how I was going to have another one, and what people would say when I had babies barely a year apart. I went and got a pregnancy test and took it. It was negative. I was relieved, but wondered why I was late.
Unfortunately, it started not too long after that, and man, it was a doozy! We were on vacation and I had cramps and felt icky and it was really heavy, so the vacation kinda sucked from there on out.
I don't think it's too abnormal to have things be a little irregular when they're just starting up again.
Good luck with TTC!

I really hope you are pregnant! They are such a blessing (the children AFTER the pregnancy, not necessarily the pregnancy! =)
With my 1st, I took test after test, and they kept coming back negative. Finally, after a month and a half, I went to the doctor for a blood test. POSITIVE!! A few months later, I realized I had a left over test and decided to use it. I did, and it came back negative again...I was 4 months pregnant. With my second, it was the same deal. (My oldest was 7 months old when we got pregnant with our second, BTW) BUT, I just recently took a test (someone had a spare and I thought I would use it so they wouldn't feel bad about wasting all that money!) and it was POSITIVE!! So, H., you never know...
When my periods came back they were weird for awhile too.
Let us all know if you are pregnant so we can rejoice with you! May the Lord richly bless you! ~S.~

i was 8 weeks pregnant with my first baby before i had a positive at-home test. i had at least 3 negative tests before that (i was very impatient!). so you could wait a week and take another test or get a blood test done at the doctor.

I kinda went through the same think last month. My first period after my son (now 13 months) was in early August another one early Sept then early October came and went, I took a test and it came out negative, I eventually got my period 10 later than my two prior periods. I was told my body was still adjusting. Good luck

If you are anything like me, waiting is the worst.......in addition to the fact that home tests can be innacurate, i would simply call your doctor and go in for a test. if you have insurance it will only be a small co-pay and the resutls will be accurate.
good luck

I never did get a positive with my DD, now 4 mo. When I had a blood test, my numbers were over 12,000. So much for the 99.99% accuracy at numbers higher than 25. You might just have taken a bum test. Sounds like you're pregnant to me if you're usually regular. GL! and congratulations?

I agree with Jenny. I'm living proof they have false negatives. That .01% does actually exist, even though OB's act like they don't. My first 3 pregnancies didn't show up until 14 weeks, 13 weeks, then the earliest was at 11 weeks pregnant. Even retesting from other boxes. My last pregnancy showed up positive the day my period was supposed to start. Our hormones can be affected by so many things, even someone who has very regular periods can have an occasional weird month. So wait a few days and retest. Also, pay attention to the signals your body gave you the last time and compare. You might already know the answer.

wait a week and re-test... it is so awful to have to wait, but you should test positive by then (or get your period).

fwiw, i didn't menstruate at all while nursing, but got my period within a week of weaning... and fairly regular after that... but I have had friends that took longer to become regularly.

Like the other ladies have said, wait a few days and take another test. False positives are fairly common especially with home pregnancy tests.

Try another test in a day or so. I have heard that they can occasionally have a false negative, but never a false positive. My sister, just for fun, took a pregnancy test she found in her bathroom closet when she was about 8 months pregnant, and it said negative! So you might have gotten a bad test.

Your probably pregnant- I know a few women who got pregnant without any period. The at home tests are supposed to be more accurate 9 days after the missed period.

After my 2nd baby, I got my period back when he was 13 months old. I had two pretty normal periods and then got pregnant again! Also, I tested negative with my 1st for the first test. Just like everyone else said, I would wait a couple of days and retest. Good luck!
