Lasik ? - San Antonio,TX

I'm having LASIK done next Friday and I'm wondering if any other mamas have had it done. If so, what did you find helpful after the procedure? Any tips or tricks I should know to make this easier?

The doctor told me I'm a prime candidate and, in his experience, people with my vision/eyes have the best results. I'm just trying to figure out how to get through this the best way possible while still taking care of my four kids.

Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

I'll have to ask about the lakes/rivers thing as we take the boat out religiously! One of the things I'm looking forward to is not being blind or worrying about losing a contact when skiing.

Thank you all for your input! I'm having it done today, so hopefully all goes well. I'll remember your advice and use the drops exactly as prescribed. I'm so nervous and excited all at the same time!

I had lasik done a few years ago. I am so happy!! The recovery time was very quick and I drove myself back for the follow up appointment (I think it was the next day).

We don't have any relatives in town, so my husband was a huge help. He drove me to and from the procedure, and watched the kids during and after while I slept and recovered. You definitely need someone for the first day to take care of things because you'll need to rest and sleep, but that's about it.

Also make sure you talk with your kids about it ahead of time because you have to wear the eye shields afterwards, and they are going to wonder what's going on. Depending on how old your kids are, they might get worried or scared to see that.

It's very easy, really. You can't wear eye makeup for a few days before (to reduce the risk of any contaminants in your eyes), which is no big deal. The surgery itself is super fast (less than 30 seconds per eye), and even with checking in, taking valium (which they will offer, and I do recommend), etc, your whole appointment will be under an hour. You will need someone to drive you home, and you'll have to wear old lady sunglasses all day the first day since your eyes will be very sensitive to light, and goggles at night to protect your eyes. But for me, the following morning I woke up and my eyesight was 20/20 and I was able to drive myself to the follow-up appointment. It was really just the first day that my eyes felt itchy and sensitive, but after that it was life as usual (but better, because I could SEE! :).

I had my eyes done a few years ago, and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself!
Take the valium. In fact, I ended up taking 1 1/2, cuz I was very antsy.
Did they tell you about the burning smell? A friend of mine warned me about that, and I'm glad she did, cuz my dr never mentioned it, and it would have REALLY freaked me out otherwise.
Take a nap as soon as you get home. The more rest you give your eyes right away, the better.
Wear the goofy-looking glasses they give you. You can go back to being fashionable in a few days.
Don't skip out on any of the follow-up appts.

I went out the next day and bought some snazzy new sunglasses to celebrate, and I drove myself. Every morning, I wake up and can see the alarm clock without hitting my nose on it, and I am so happy. Good luck!!

I had Lasik surgery done back about 6 years ago and it has been the best thing I could have ever done for myself. When I had mine done it was on a Friday afternoon around 4pm and I by 5:15pm I was already heading home. When I got home took a nap, by 9 pm I was already cooking and watching my "novelas" (soap operas). The next day I drove myself to the follow-up appointment then after that I went to my son's baseball game at 1pm.

During the procedure, you will feel little pressure, some blurring and, there will be minor moments were it blacks out, but that is normal, don't be scared. I'm telling you this not to get you uneasy but to expect it. You will not feel any pain at all and by the time you are down you are already up and gone, it is that quick. The doctor gave me two types of drops, one was an antibiotic and the other one was drops that were like gel drops. Oh! Those gel drops were the life saver and I still use them during allergy season because they feel so cool. They are a great. The actual procedure itself only took about 10-15 minutes long tops. Everything else from the paperwork to taking the "happy pills" to relax you was what made the time longer. You will need someone to take you home. My sister in law was the one that took me home. Make sure you go straight to bed and lay on your back not sideways or on your stomach. The doctor should tell you what to use or will give you some eye protection so you will not rub your eyes accidently. Make sure you don't rub your eyes and don't wear any make up for about 4 to 5 days. And don't forget about those shades; have them on to protect you from sunlight every time you are outside. I wore glasses and contacts since I was 13 years old. I’m now 39 years old and for me to be able to see perfectly at night has been a "thank you God" for this medical miracle thing. Don't be scared and congratulations on having it done. Oh and my vision, it seems to get better and better.

I had it done about 4 months ago and it is the best thing I ever did! I had it done at 8am, came home, ate lunch and slept for about 3 hours. My husband and I were out to dinner that night.

Drops, drops and more drops. Use those lubricating drops several times per day for several months. I think I used mine for about 6 months believe it or not! And sleep/keep your eyes closed as much as possible when you get home from surgery that first day. Also, be very careful if you have little ones that they don't bop you in the eye accidentally those first couple of days-it can cause the "flap" to detach. And I'm sure your doc will mention, but no swimming in lakes/rivers for a while, but I can't remember how long. Good luck-you will love it!

I did one eye about 4 years ago. I remember being nervous about the
procedure and opted out of watching the movie clip showing what to
expect. It was quick and painless and EFFECTIVE. I chose to do just
one eye for far away vision (so I could drive and read signs) and try
a contact on the other eye for close up. It's called mono vision.
You can get used to it, but, eventually, I chose to use reading glasses for close up mostly because I'm uncomfortable about touching my eyes twice a day. I may eventually do the other eye for close up. Recovery is speedy.
Good luck.
