A close friend of mine had it last summer. She is doing good now, but it's been quite a journey for her...she's has 3 kids, all under 6! The biggest challenge for her was eating solid foods. Post-surgery she was on a strict all liquid diet for 6 weeks and when it came time to try solids, she threw them all up . She can now eat some solids, but cannot go near any carbs. She cannot eat bread, pasta, potatoes, etc. She says it's very challenging. She doesn't regret having the surgery, but it's totally changed her life, and though the weight is coming off, it's an everyday struggle.

I personally think it's a terrible idea. The lapband isn't as effective as conventional bariatric surgery and it often requires frequent adjustments for reasons that have nothing to do with the person. Although there are many people who have success with this type of surgery, overall there is a higher failure rate (ie, doesn't work) than with the conventional surgery.

The recovery time from this isn't always faster or easier than conventional bariatric surgery. The diets are very similar and your expected weight loss will be less with the lapband.

If you're really interested in this, you will need to do two things. One is to make sure your insurance will pay for it and what they require you do prior to the surgery (it seems that every provider has their own requirements). Have them give you a list of providers that they accept and then schedule a meeting with them.

I personally had the standard surgery and I lost over 115 pounds in like 4 months. Another patient who has their lapband at the same time as me only lost 38 pounds during that time.

Good luck and if you want to talk more, just send me a note.

My sister had this surgery almost 2 years ago I think within the year she lost 100 lbs there abouts and has kept it off. If she doesn't mind and you want I can give your her email and she can let you know all about it. Let me know and good luck on your decision. Oh and I have seen her at places before and not recognized her right away lol!!

A friend of mine had it in Sept 2006. She went from a size 22 to a current size 5. She bounced back pretty quickly as well.

I have not had this surgery, but a good friend of mine is going to go thru it on April 22nd. I could ask her if she would give her e-mail address to you. Perhaps you and her could discuss it.
