My grandaughter is 31/2 years old. her pediatrician seems to think she my be lactose intolerante do to tummy aches. So she would like her not to have any dairy for 2 weeks. The daycare said to pack a lunch for her every day.

What are some good non-dairy foods to pack. She loves string cheese, mac and cheese and yogart.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

What can I do next?

Did your doc give you a primer on reading labels as well because he should have. Alot of foods have Lactoseand lactosol in them as humuctants. So carefully read the labels. Also are you sure that she does not have IBS?

Soynut Butter and Jelly or Almond Butter (w/a touch of honey- mmmm) by itself or with jelly. Both good sandwiches.

But if there are nut allergies in daycare, you'd have to go with soynut butter there. Bananas, grapes... Really any fruit.

I love (so does my son) brown rice w/a touch of water and cinnamon and a dash of sugar. That actually has less sugar than most cereals.

If she likes ham, salami, turkey... A sandwich w/one of those and some mustard is tasty. If she likes tomatoes (my son does a lot) you could add a slice of tomato.

Hummus as previously stated is yummy. Especially with flatbread. I'm kind of spoiled here near the 'Arabic capital' of the US though.

Almond milk is a tasty alternative and it still has the vitamin D and calcium she needs.

Granola just for a snack mixed with dried fruit.

I love yogurt too... Unfortunately it doesn't like me. :)

Can you tell I'm lactose intolerant? : )

If I think of anything else, I will add.

I am lactose intolerant.
Fruit cups, jello cups, applesauce cups, grapes, penne noodles with chopped tomatoes and a simple olive oil and garlic sauce, pretzels, oyster crackers, chopped (boiled) red potatoes with a little butter, or chopped rosemary chicken.
Don't underestimate the gourmet meal for a 3 year old! Find something simple like the chicken and red potatoes and make a huge batch of a recipe and then store portions in your fridge for every day of the week. Daycare heats it in the microwave and she's eating healthy in minutes.
If you do find that she is lactose intolerant, use Lactaid milk in your recipes that call for milk.
FYI, if she is lactose intolerant, no dairy for 2 weeks and then eating it will make her really sick. So you will know immediately!!! Headaches, diarrhea, or constipation and gas.

Any fruits, veggies that she likes; crackers (read labels); hardboiled eggs, cold chicken drumstick (or other piece).

Would she eat mac without the cheese? you could put it ina thermos, with a little broth to moisten it, or maybe a cold pasta salad with a vinegar/oil type dressing?

Soup or hot dog (cut up) in a thermos (read lables). Peanut butter sandwich (or almond butter or sunflower seed butter if day care is peanut-free).

For drinks: water, juice or a mix of the two; almond milk.

It might take longer than 2 weeks to get all the residual dairy out of her system.

Good luck

I went through the same with my son. I found that not all dairy products bother him. Ice Cream and milk are the biggies that cause him some tummy pain. Also there is a chewable lactase tablet that you can get at the store in "tummy" isle. There also is a great product that you can get online called Liquid lactase http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_10?url=search-al... that treats milk so you can cook with it or make home made ice cream or use for chocolate milk if she REALLY likes likes it.
Wish you the best,
C.

My son is Lactose Intolerant so I have some experience with this. I have found hummus with crackers works,Ritz and Club original are his favorite. Any type of fruit she likes. If she likes mini carrots or sugar snap peas these also go well with hummus or on there own. Jello works as well and you can buy soy yoghurts at Target or Whole foods. Don't get goats milk ones they are a very strong taste my son did not like them. Non dairy cheese is not nice either so we just avoid it altogether. Goldfish should be okay as they are baked, don't get xtra cheesy that will set her tummy off. Vanilla wafers are a no no as well too much milk in them.
Any dried cereal like frosties or cheerios will be okay to mix in. I do find it feels like a lot of snack foods but that is what mine likes. If she likes sandwiches instead of butter or peanut butter there are other options can't remember them right now but they are sold next to the peanut butter.

I hope this helps! Good Luck

There are some really good soy-based or coconut-milk-based yogurts that she might like. We have a lot of dairy-free recipes on our website, www.welcomingkitchen.com. Good luck!
