Lactose Intolerant

My 2 year old recently had a stomach bug and now has become lactose intolerant. This happened when she was one and we had to keep her on soy milk for about 6 weeks until she could tolerate milk again. She drank the soy then but now doesn't like the taste of either soy or rice milk. Does anyone have any other ideas on what she might like to replace milk?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your input, suggestions and advice. We tried Lactaid this morning and she drank it all down. She has had two cups without problem. I'm going to try to get some probiotics back in her diet, but so far cheese has also upset her stomach so I'm not sure how yogurt will go. Hopefully this is only temporary as before.

Thanks again!

You might try watering down regular milk, half water and half milk, and see if that is more tolerable. Cow's milk contains many nutrients not found in soy or rice milk.
Another suggestion is goat's milk, which some find much more digestible than cow's milk.
Hope this helps. Best wishes,
M.

My daughter and I both are intolerant/allergic to dairy. She has Rice Milk at school (it doesn't allow nuts). We do Almond Milk at home. The Almond Milk comes sweetened or unsweetened. It's definitely the tastiest.

Hi H.,
My 19 month old son is also lactose intolerant and after taking him off of alimentum, we had thje most difficult time finding the right milk for him. What we ended up using is a lctose free milk from Wal-Mart call Dairy Ease. (We had previosuly tried Soy, he is also alergic to that, and rice, but he didn't like that either). I hope this helps your little one.

Hi H.:

None of my kids are lactose intolerant, but I am. There are times when I crave milk, b/c I really do like it even though it makes me sick. If I add chocolate or strawberry sauce to the milk, I am able to drink it without getting sick. Maybe if you tried this, and gave her small amounts of the milk, it may work. Just a thought. Hope it helps, and good luck.

My daughter has a 22month old son who drinks soy milk with a Shaklee Meal Shake. Have you ever heard of Shaklee? It is the number one natural nutritional company in America. We love their products.
Her website is www.shaklee.net/davidandeveelise

I have 4 grandbabies under the age of 3 1/2 and a teenage granddaughter.

We are so blessed that they are all very healthy.

My 17 month old is lactose intolerant and we just use lactose free milk. Depending on the store you go to, they may have generic but Lactaid is the name brand. Tastes exactly like regular milk!

You might try probiotics for her. Whenever my dd gets a stomach bug, before she can even hold things down I give her probiotics. It has helped lessen the symptoms and allieviate diarrea. I give her something called Maxi Baby-dophlis by Country life. I put it directly on her tounge (helped with light case of thrush too!) and then give her something to drink it down. I think they make some powders too that older kiddos can have.

Some people can handle yogurt or keifer when they are lactose intolerant. Depending on the brand you get, you can find some with several strains of good bacteria.....I like Stonyfield Whole Milk. They have 6 strains.

You also might look into goat milk. Not sure if it will repopulate her system with good bacteria like the yogurt or probiotic supplments, but might be a decent change. Not sure if the lactose is bothersome or not. You'd have to research that.

Good luck.

I've had goat's milk recommended, as it is much easier to digest than cow's milk and not as possible to be sensitive to as soy.

We use goat milk in our house - to avoid casein (a protein found in cow milk but not other animals), not lactose though. I would assume that lactose, milk sugar, would be in any milk including human, so I think the label is often misused. I put some vanilla in the goat milk to make it taste better for us. =) If you're so willing, sometimes people do fine on raw milk even though they can't do pasturized milk; the pasturization process alters the proteins significantly. www.realmilk.org has information and options. You can buy raw cheeses at a health food store too. Here's some information on soy that may be a bit radical: http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/ploy.html. Good luck!

My son became lactose intolerant as an infant. We switched him to lactose free formula and he did much better. He did not respond well to soy milk. Try a lactose free milk, lick Lactaid and maybe mix it with a little chocolate syrup to help it taste better.

My daughter is also lactose intolerant. Have you tried adding a little bit of 100% juice to either the soy or rice milk? That seemed to work for us. Both of my daughters will drink it. Even the one who can have milk.

Hi H.,

My 2-year-old son doesn't have lactose intolerance, but my husband does. He didn't like the soy or rice milk either, but we found some lactose-free milk that isn't soy or rice based that tastes much more like regular milk. We get it at Safeway -- I think it's Lucerne brand. I don't know nutritionally of any reason it wouldn't be appropriate for a toddler, so you may want to give it a try.

I have 2 thriving children; one is 6 and the other is 3. I breast fed both of my children and then weaned them at one year to toddler formula because they would NOT drink milk. My six year old would not tolerate any form of milk until she was 5. Yes, I said FIVE. Our pediatrician was fine with it because she LOVED cheese, yogurt and other dairy. I was careful to make sure she got the nutrients from other sources. Now, she loves milk and drinks it all of the time. I was worried then, but now that my 3 year old is the same way.....he HATES milk, but will drink yogurt drinks, eat yogurt, cheese etc..I've been this route before and I'm not as concerned. Hope this helps.

I recommend Pediasure. I gave it to my first child to supplement her diet because she wasn't eating enough and she loved the different flavors. She would ask her her pediasure every day and looked forward to me opening her can. I hope that helps.

So sorry to hear that. What about almond milk? My family can't digest milk very well so I never started my son on it. Soy can create extra estrogen in the body so I stayed away from it, but my friends say it doesn't taste so good anyway. My kid loves vanilla flavored almond milk and you can get it unsweetened. I mix unsweetened and sweetened in his cup and stick to unsweetened for his cereal (he's 2 1/2). It's kind of expensive.

Does Yogurt effect her? Somehow, we can digest yogurt okay so I buy the whole milk, cream on top, organic variety (Stoneyfield). You can choose plain if you want to avoid the sugar. This gives my boy the good fat he needs plus calcium.

Oh yeah, and children's pro biotics are a great way to restore the digestive system after a bug or antibiotics (health stores, comes in powder to mix in applesauce or whatever). I give it to my boy every week or so to support his immune system (80% of the immune system is in the intestines).
Good luck!

I'm lactose intolerant and either use Lactaid or Dairy Ease brands of milk. No problems with either one. When away from home I use the lactase pills but I'm not sure if they are approved for someone so young. Another good option is the goat milk, I much prefer that over the soy stuff. Even the vanilla soy seems yucky.

Almond milk, hadn't heard about that. I'll have to give it a try.

Hi H.,
When my son was 1 he also went through a bout where he couldn't tolerate milk and since we were all on WIC our Dr wrote a perscription for Pediasure and Goats Milk and then WIC was able to print checks for him for those since they are awful expensive and the kids loved the pediasure and goats milk. But when my son was about 2 to 3 he got over his milk problem and has been fine ever since.

First, I would take her in to the doctor to run some tests before deciding that she's lactose intolerant. You want to make sure it's not something else. I doubt that just not giving her milk for a while could make her intolerant of it.

My little guy loves Living Harvest Hempmilk -- great source of omega 3 & 6 and protein. He also drinks almond and oat milk. None of these replace nursing - they are just additional foods. I have to remind myself about his taste phases too, and not rule something out forever when he refuses it -- he comes back around.
