I have had problems with numerous miscarriages both before and after our daughter was born. We have been trying for another child for a little over a year now and have just been having the same problems. Well we both know that at some point in our lives I will be pregnant again but have always felt, even when we first met, that we would also have the blessing of adoption in our lives at some point as well.

Well here comes my question. . .My sister in law (who has 2 young kids already) is pregnant again (a good chance with twins) and "her heart is not into having them" (those are her words) Well everyone is trying to convice the young dad that they can't afford more (exp since they afford the others by my husbands grandparents letting them live in a house the own (for free) they buy the cars pay for all the bills food doctors etc.) Well if they can convice the dad we (and the family including my sister in law loves the idea of this) want it adopt the baby/babies from them. My sister in law has smoked through all 3 pregnancies she has had. . .GRRRR. . .so I want them to have the benefits of at least SOME breastmilk if possible without going to an expensive milk bank. Is there anyway for me to produce milk without actually giving birth? I have a pump but how would I go about it and how long does it take. IF we do get them she is due sometime in March so dont know if that would be enough time and if I should start pumping now just in case (if that would even work). Thanks for your help and here's hoping for the best!

What can I do next?

If you go to http://forums.llli.org/index.php there is a whole section on relactation. Also you can contact your local La Leache League leader and see if she can offer you any help on lactating without giving birth. I have heard of it before happening. Good Luck and you and your husband have a big heart for doing this!!!

Kay at the Nesting Place is great. It's in Grapevine, and she checks MamaSource a lot. Her email is ____@____.com (I hope that's right). She is a lactation consultant, and I think she used to be an RN. You can also find The Nesting Place if you google it. Good luck and God Bless!

Dear A.,

What a great gift you want to give these twins! Yes, you can breastfeed an adopted baby. I have a friend who is a doula who was going to help me. But we ended up adopting kids who were older. If you can find a midwife around this area, that would be a good person to ask. I'm new here so I don't know of any. Also, there are some Lactation Consultants. Midwifes would know about these as well. OB/GYNs might know of those as well.

Hope this helps. And thank you for caring about such little children as to adopt.

I recently saw a tv program where the mom to be (they used a serogate) took a combination of a birth control pill and some other hormone, so that she would lactate. Consult your doctor, to see exactly what the hormone combination is necessary to lactate. Good luck!
