Lactation

Okay moms, I nursed my daughter from May 2007-July 2008. I am STILL producing milk (well its more like collostrum in consistency). My sister in law told me she had the same issue, she actually nursed her daughter for the same length of time. I want this to be gone! Do I need to ask a doctor to give me something to dry me up?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses, I really appreciate the feedback! I feel much better that I am not the only one dealing with this. According to what I read on a mayoclinic website, many doctors treatments are risky and may not even work. (I know that when you tamper with hormone levels by using birth control there are risks of blood clots and such, an even higher level of estrogen used in a shot to stop milk production can lead to an even HIGHER risk of blood clots...no thanks!) I will try the natural things first, over 6 months ago I tried the cabbage leaves, no luck, but I am going to try it again, for longer than a day. And sage tea too, wish me luck ladies!

I don't think they give medications to "dry" you up. Wear a snug fitting bra at all times. When you shower do not let the water run over your breasts. Don't stimulate your nipples in any way. You can also use cold cabbage leaves in your bra to help dry up your milk. Good luck.

Babies R Us has something you can use to dry you up. It's supposed to be a natural supplement. I would check it out, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to a dr.

I'm not sure this will help but when I wanted to dry up after nursing, I made sage tea. Just use rubbed sage (from the spice section of the baking aisle). Steep it in hot water for 5 minutes and drink. Not the best tasting stuff but I was dried up in a couple of days. You can look it up to get better details.

I have been told that the shot that doctors have doesn't work very well. I did a search and found the sage tea recipe. Cabbage leaves in your bra also can help.

Hope this helps.

I breastfed my last child for nearly 2 1/2 years and was still leaking nearly a year later - I had my prolactin levels checked - my doctor just said it was normal and it would eventually go away...

Check with your doctor for sure.

A friend of mine had this and her doctor ended up giving her a some kind of shot to dry her up. You haven't been breastfeeding for quite a while, so I don't think it is going to dry up on its own. It could also be an indicator that your hormones are off.

It is really quite normal, I still produced for over 2 years after I stopped nursing my youngest. But now that it stopped, I found my breasts hurt every time my cycle comes around, and let me tell you it is painful. Right now I would not mind if I did still produce. If it is bothering you, I would talk to your DR to see if there is anything that can be done.

A mother gift at Plano Presby sells a cabbage cream for $20 a tube. It's $$ than just buying cabbage but it has good directions and is not as gross to use. I have used it before and will use it again when I am done nursing.

Good luck!

If you have your Obstetrician put you on birth control that will stop the milk production. I wasn't fortunate enough to produce enough milk to breast feed, but when I went in for my 6 week checkup and asked to be put back on birth control she said that was a side effect. So that may be an option for you.

You will probably want to go get your hormone levels checked at the doctor just to make sure it isn't something serious, but if everything is okay, then Earth Mama Angel Baby makes an herbal tea called No More Milk tea that is supposed to dry up your milk. But do go to the doctor to have it checked because lactating while not nursing can be a symptom of a thyroid imbalance or other scary things.

It's normal. My son weaned himself at 12 months and I still produced some milk for almost a year! My milk didn't drop and make a mess, but it definitely was still there. If it's really bothering you, then I know they can give you a shot to dry up your milk.

I would try the health food store and find some herbs to help with that, then try the doctor if that didn't happen.
I had a good friend that did the same thing. She nursed her son for like a year and it took some time for her to stop producting that last little bit.
Good luck,
L.

I would advise getting checked out at the doctor's first. There are other conditions that may be causing that and it would be best to get it checked out first. If you don't want to do what they offer, if it is just needing to dry the milk up, then just say "No, thank you" and try the natural remedies at that time.
